Buoyed by recent events in the Caribbean, Cricket Australia (CA) is confident the West Indies will take part in next year’s World Cup.
The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) confirmed on Wednesday that 14 top-flight players had been contracted for a three-Test series in South Africa.
The breakthrough followed a pay dispute that resulted in the team abandoning a tour of India.
India’s powerful cricket board responded by suspending ties with the West Indies last month, also threatening to claim millions in compensation.
There were fears CA could have been hurt by the ongoing fallout, with the West Indies’ participation in next year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand anything but assured.
In addition, Australia are slated to tour the Caribbean in 2015 en route to England for the much-hyped Ashes series.
The issue was fleshed out at a recent International Cricket Council meeting in Dubai, with CA chairman Wally Edwards present.
Edwards was thrilled with Wednesday’s news.
“It’s pleasing that West Indies cricket appears to have found a way through some of its recent problems and most importantly is getting its team back on the field,” Edwards said.
“We’re looking forward to the West Indies playing its part in the ICC World Cup and then the Australian tour of the Caribbean next year.”
Edwards said last month he was concerned by the saga.
But he noted the West Indies’ tour of South Africa would be the best indicator of how serious the issues were.
“Having the West Indies commit to its upcoming tour of South Africa is a positive outcome,” he said on Wednesday.
“It is critical that member nations fulfil their commitments to the ICC Future Tours Program if cricket is to succeed as a global game.”
The WICB said on Wednesday that Darren Bravo was the only player who asked not to be considered for the series, due to personal reasons.
