Jordan Spieth is in record-breaking mode at Augusta, setting a new mark of 130 at 14-under for 36 holes, breaking Raymond Floyd’s all-time record of 131, set in 1976.

“That’s cool, any time you set a record around here is awesome,” was Spieth’s reaction.

But there are far more records in store for the most exciting 21-year-old in world golf.

The 54-hole record of 201, 15-under, is shared by Floyd, and Tiger Woods set in 1997, while the 72-hole record is held by Woods at 270, 18-under, also set in 1997.

And Phil Mickelson’s record 25 birdies in the 2001 Masters is also in Spieth’s cross-hairs with his 15 birdies already in the bank.

This morning Spieth was flawless, holing six birdies – three going out, and three coming in.

Spieth’s 64 66 has him five shots clear at the halfway mark, with only Charley Hoffman remotely in touch after two fighting rounds of 67 68 for 9-under.

Dustin Johnson turned in the most extraordinary round of the day. Starting with a double, Johnson peeled off three eagles at the second, eighth, and 15th – a feat never matched in one round in the 79-year history of the Masters. He finished at 7-under for the tournament with Justin Rose, who fired in a 70 today, and Paul Casey with a 68.

And with four birdies in the homeward nine, Phil Mickelson is getting his act together at 6-under.

Under-rated Kevin Na matched Spieth’s round of the day with an eagle, six birdies, and two bogeys to jump 47 places up the leaderboard.

But many of the pre-tournament contenders have fallen by the wayside.

Jason Day was the most serious casualty, unable to match his opening round 67 with a 2-over 74 that included an eagle, just one birdie, and five bogeys.

“It wasn’t my day, I didn’t trust my swing, so I just tried to get into the house with the least damage,” Day said with a rueful smile.

“My small errors were costly, especially two three-putts – I’m off to the range.”

Day is at 3-under with compatriot Adam Scott who carded a 69 today.

World number one Rory McIlroy, and defending champion Bubba Watson are right out of contention.

McIlroy shot 40-31 today to be at 2-under when he was in serious doubt about making the cut at the turn.

Watson carded a second 71 to be 2-under where he was joined by Tiger Woods after a second round 69.

Notables to miss the cut at 144:
Jim Furyk, Bernhard Langer, Brandt Snedeker, Stephen Gallagher, Luke Donald, Camillo Villegas, and Billy Horshel, Padraig Harrington, Victor Dubuisson, Jose Maia Olazabal, Miguel Angel Jiminez, Thomas Bjorn, Tom Watson, Freddie Couples, Trevor Immelman, JB Holmes, Martin Kaymer, Robert Streb, and Ben Crane.

Ben Crenshaw, in his 44th and final Masters performance, was greeted with thunderous applause right round the Augusta course to the 18h hole, bowing out with 91 85 for 32-over.

But the scoreline was immaterial, there were so many highly emotional moments all afternoon for the very popular 63-year-old Texan.

Well played Ben Crenshaw, you have been a credit to the sport.
