Wawrinka in three sets. 6-4, 6-3, 6-4
Stan Wawrinka continues his quest for a Wimbledon title against Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the third round. Join The Roar for live scores from around 10.00pm (AEST).
Wawrinka will need to use his strong backhand and offensive backline strokes to shut out Verdasco. Stanislas’ game has won him two Grand Slams in his last six attempts and that number should grow. The Swiss will want to set up a match with either Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis or David Goffin.
Fernando Verdasco has been the surprise packet of the tournament having knocked out 32nd seed Dominic Thiem in the second round and also 39th ranked Martin Klizan in the first. Verdasco has a chance however, it will be hard for him to shut out one of the tour’s best all-rounders.
Wawrinka and Verdasco have met on three occasions, Verdasco has won two of those with Wawrinka taking out one match.
Their most recent matchup was at Acapulco in 2012 where Verdasco won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. 4th seed Wawrinka has a win-loss record in his past ten matches of 9-1 and is coming off a win in straight sets over Victor Estrella Burgos 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. Verdasco has a record of 6-4 and is coming off a win in five sets over Dominic Thiem 5-7, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
