Carlton president Mark LoGiudice denies they have narrowed their AFL senior coaching candidates to a couple.
While LoGiudice hopes they will announce the appointment by the end of this month, he said it was more important to get it right.
Interim coach John Barker and Hawthorn assistant Brendon Bolton are seen as two of the favourites.
During Saturday night’s loss to North Melbourne, one radio commentator said Barker was already over the line.
But the Blues president would not say how many candidates are left.
“It’s interesting where you guys (media) get your information from … I’m not sure we’re at the last 10 (candidates) yet,” LoGiudice said on Monday.
“The most important thing is that the decision is made with the proper due diligence – hopefully that’s late August.”
There has also been speculation that the disastrous 138-point loss to Hawthorn two weekends ago – the worst losing margin in Carlton history – had dealt Barker’s prospects a fatal blow.
“We need to look at more than just one game,” LoGiudice said.
“There’s a lot more to a coach these days than just judging a person on one particular game.”
LoGiudice said Carlton would also not be worried if their new coach was involved with a finals team.
“We will pick the right person … if that means they are playing (sic) finals, well then we will wait for right person to finish and come over to the club,” he said.
