The W-League power rankings following Round 8 of the 2015-16 W-League and this week we see a couple of derbies in Melbourne and Sydney.

The ladder doesn’t always tell the full story, and these rankings only take into account recent form, not season form. So a bad start to season isn’t punished here.

Position 1: Canberra United (no change)
Ash Sykes was the difference here between the two sides. All class, scoring both goals of the match in Canberra’s 2-0 win against Brisbane Roar.

The win puts Canberra in outright second on the ladder, and in good position to make a serious attack at City should they slip up. Next they take on Adelaide at home in what should be an exciting clash.

Position 2: Melbourne City (+1)
Goals to Jennifer Beattie, Kim Little and a double for Larissa Crummer saw the City girls unblemished season remain in a dominating 4-0 win against the Victory. The girls take on Newcastle Jets next week in the televised match; well worth the price of admission to this 1v3.

Position 3: Newcastle Jets (-1)
Took the weekend off, and would have watched the Victory/City game with interest as they prepare to beat the undefeated Melbourne City next week.

Position 4: Sydney FC (no change)
Shared the points with their Western sisters in the Sydney derby, with Alanna Kennedy scoring in the first and Kyah Simon the second half. The coaches must be thinking what if with the past two games, as Sydney FC now find themselves in the log jam mid-table rather than setting the pace with only one point from the past 2 games. It doesn’t get any easier with a trip to Perth to take on the Glory on Sunday night.

Position 5: Melbourne Victory (no change)
They will be disappointed with the scoreline, but Melbourne City are undefeated for a reason, and the Victory girls will need to put the 0-4 loss behind them and look to next week. The host the Wanderers at home, and will be looking to secure the three points to keep their faint finals hopes alive.

Position 6: Perth Glory (no change)
Extreme conditions greeted the Perth girls in Adelaide, with their game changing not only scheduled kick off but venue as well. Shawn Billam opened the scoring in the seventh minute, but a goal late in the game denied the win for the Glory. They return home to host Sydney FC on Sunday night.

Position 7: Adelaide United (+1)
Same as the Perth lead in, changing of kick off and venue interrupting the preparation for the girls in Red. Came away with a draw thanks to Alexandra Grummer finding the back of the net in the 75th for a 1-1 draw. The Lady Reds’ next assignment is against the in-form Canberra United girls in Canberra.

Position 8: Western Sydney Wanderers (-1)
2-2 draw against their sky blue sisters, with goals to Hannah Beard and Liz Grey. Both goals game after Sydney had already scored, so the Wanderers were always playing catchup, which isn’t going to work against the elite opposition the W-League now offers. A trip to Melbourne to take on Victory awaits the girls next week.

Position 9: Brisbane Roar (no change)
Not an ideal result for the Roar, and will be missing Kirsty Yallop next week to suspension too. Will use the week off this week to regroup and prepare for a dash to the finals.

So there we are, Roarers, with a bit of quiet week in the power rankings. The Premiership ladder is congested mid table with Canberra trying to join City as the breakaway teams. As last season showed, Perth Glory skipped away, only to lose the grand final, so anything can happen in football.
