How can South African fast-bowling legend Dale Steyn be the ICC’s number one ranked bowler in the world – by a comfortable 28 points no less – and not be selected in the ICC’s Test Team of the Year?

The same question of a different nature can be asked of Steve Smith.

The Australian skipper is 20th in the ICC’s ODI batting rankings, but has been selected in the ODI Team of the Year.

Smith, and Black Caps left-arm paceman Trent Boult, are the only two selected in both the ICC’s Test and ODI Teams of the Year.

And Smith has regained his top Test batsman ranking, sharing the honour with England’s Joe Root.
