W-League power rankings: Round 9

This week we saw some great football from the W-League’s defending champions and this season’s premiership favourites.

The ladder doesn’t always tell the full story, and these rankings only take into account recent form, not season form. So a bad start to season isn’t punished here.

Position 1: Melbourne City (+1)
A goal just before half-time by Beattie Goad was the difference between Melbourne City and the Newcastle Jets. Newcastle defended out of their skins, but City showed their class in continuing their attacking ways.

Goalkeeper Brianna Davey kept another clean sheet, and with City are a real chance of going through the season unblemished. The girls host Perth Glory next Sunday at home.

Position 2: Canberra United (-1)
Canberra’s Ash Sykes failed to trouble the scoreboard but still troubled the Adelaide United defence, and the hunting in packs mentality of Canberra was on full display.

A goal to Jenna McCormic and a double to Michelle Heyman put the game to bed, with Veronica Perez slotting a penalty late in the game to give the girls in green a well-deserved 4-0 win.

They continue their golden home-game run against Melbourne Victory, and will be looking to go 3-0-0 at McKellar before Christmas.

Position 3: Sydney FC (+1)
Sydney FC’s game against Perth Glory was delicately poised going into the break at 2-1. But goals to Nicola Bolger and Kyah Simon in the 84th minute put the game beyond reach of Perth and crucially gave Sydney the three points away from home. The Sky Blues host Brisbane Roar next week, and will be looking to keep their current form intact.

Position 4: Newcastle Jets (-1)
The Jets came closest to competing with Melbourne City than any other team this season, but at the end of the day, it’s still zero points. The insentiy in the middle third was strong, but lacked a little polish up front. How they respond next week against Adelaide will be telling,

Position 5: Western Sydney Wanderers (+3)
The masters of draws will look back at their game against Melbourne Victory as a missed opportunity after going two goals up through Linda O’Neill and Carmelina Moscato. They conceded twice, however, to end with another stalemate.

Goal difference is the only thing keeping them out of position four on the ladder. A week off, and some time to re-evaluate for Western Sydney.

Position 6: Melbourne Victory (-1)
Melbourne Victory came back from two goals down to level the scores through Melinda Barbieri and Natasha Dowie in the second half. Victory still sit bottom of the premiership ladder, and head to Canberra next week in one what is predicted to be a very hot day for football.

Position 7: Perth Glory (-1)
A double to Vanessa DiBernardo was the only positive to take out of the game for Perth Glory, and it doesn’t get any easier next week with Melbourne City in Melbourne. A heavy loss next week could call curtains on their season, while an upset will put them back in the hunt for another finals berth.

Position 8: Brisbane Roar (+1)
Took on the bye, and were happy to chill on the weekend. They head to Sydney next weekend to try and kick-start a dash for a finals berth.

Position 9: Adelaide United (-2)
A 0-4 loss was a fair reflection of their game against Canberra, with the Lady Reds only troubling the opposition goalkeeper twice throughout the match. The referee was quick to the whistle, which killed momentum on some of the Reds’ plays. A trip to Newcastle next week isn’t going to be any easier for Adelaide.

So there we are, Roarers. With Canberra staking a claim for second, the race for positions three to seven is heating up. Can City go undefeated, or could they stumble and open the door for Canberra?
