Round 13 of the 2015-16 W-League saw Sydney FC put their hand up to take on Canberra in the semis, and Brisbane continue their late season charge to the finals.

1. Canberra United (+1)
Canberra scored a 3-0 win against Western Sydney Wanderers, with Michelle Heyman and Lydia Williams taking the day off after a hard week in camp with the Matildas.

Goals to Caitlin Munoz, Ash Sykes and a first W-League goal to Rebecca Kiting capped off a great weekend for Canberra. Sykes was also shown yellow for descent, after a horrible challenge from WSW defender went unnoticed by the ref.

Canberra now boast clean sheets in all matches at McKellar park this season.

Next is a Friday night match against Adelaide, with a chance to get minutes into bench players before the finals.

2. Melbourne City (-1)
At the start of the season, a bye in the penultimate week wouldn’t have been a big deal. Now, it seems like a great stroke of luck, a week off so close to finals to refresh.

The City girls get the best warm up to finals, playing the semi-finals-bound Sydney FC at home.

3. Brisbane Roar (no change)
Goals to Claire Polkinghorne, Katrina Gorry, Kirsty Yallop and Angela Beard set-up the Roar’s 4-0 win against Melbourne Victory.

More importantly, it closes the for/against gap with Adelaide and Newcastle, setting up a potential elimination final with the Jets this weekend.

4. Sydney FC (-1)
Won 2-0 against Newcastle, with goals to Kyah Simon and Leena Khamis. But as a team about to head into the finals, they need to find another gear, as Canberra and City will not be anywhere near as easy.

Sydney get the perfect chance to test their finals credentials against Melbourne City this week.

5. Perth Glory (+3)
Waited over an hour before a goal was scored in the match in Perth, but a double to Vanessa Di Bernardo was enough to give Perth the 2-1 win against Adelaide, with a double yellow/red card to Ella Mastrantonio the only negative from the match.

While it won’t be enough for last season’s premiers to make the finals, they can still finish their season strongly against Western Sydney Wanderers.

6. Melbourne Victory (-1)
Went down to Brisbane 0-4, closing out a disappointing season. The introduction of City has decimated their playing squad, and they just never recovered.

With the bye next week, the girls will have to enjoy the rest of the season from the stands.

7. Newcastle Jets (no change)
Last week’s loss against the Victory, coupled with this week’s loss 2-0 to Sydney has probably cost Newcastle a finals berth. Their form line for the past five weeks – LLWLL – has derailed them, after holding City 0-1 and Canberra 0-0 earlier in the year.

They can still make it, but it will involve beating an in-form Roar in Brisbane in the TV game.

8. Adelaide United (-2)
A disappointing 2-1 loss to Perth has possibly cost Adelaide a finals berth, with the Reds’ lone goal scorer, Abigail Dahlkemper, not enough to inspire a late comeback.

Doesn’t get any easier for Adelaide, taking on Canberra in Adelaide on Friday night.

9. Western Sydney Wanderers (no change)
A 3-0 loss to Canberra could easily have been worse, with United resting some of their stars. The best chances for the Wanderers came from horrible defensive errors from the Canberra backline.

Finish their season with a home game against Perth, with both teams no chance of featuring in the finals.

There we have it Roarers, it comes down to Adelaide, Brisbane and Newcastle for the final spot in the finals. My gut feeling is the Roar will get through, as they are in form, and could cause some massive upsets in the finals.
