Former Gold Coast Suns player Joel Wilkinson is aiming for an NFL career after being picked up by the Arizona Cardinals.
Wilkinson follows in Jarryd Hayne’s footsteps in trying to crack the NFL as a non-punter and will look to make the roster in the cornerback position.
Speaking to Cardinals.com, Wilkinson said it’s always been a dream of his to make it in America.
“In Australia US sports is very prominent. For me it was always something I aspired to and wanted to pursue,” he said.
Wilkinson has been in contact with fellow Aussie and former Cardinals punter Ben Graham about what it takes to make the switch from AFL.
“I had some brief discussions with Ben prior to coming here. He gave me a great insight.”
“Naturally people are going to think I’m a punter from my sport, so playing cornerback, that was position that was very similar to what I played in Australia,” Wilkinson said.
