From football hero to Hollywood star to infamous accused murderer: Muted tributes for OJ Simpson
The extraordinary episodes after his life as an American Football hero quite overshadowed the career of O.J. Simpson, who has died at the age…
Jarryd Hayne had his first real taste of new San Francisco 49ers’ head coach Chip Kelly’s offence and it could spell trouble for the former NRL star.
One of Hayne’s major running back rivals on the 49ers’ squad, Mike Davis, is raving about Kelly’s fast-paced scheme.
With six running backs on the roster and at least one more expected to be picked up in next week’s NFL Draft, the players who do not thrive under Kelly will be cut.
“Let’s just say we go really really really fast,” Davis wrote on Twitter after a morning session on Monday.
“I love this offense!”
Preparing for only his second season in his new football code, Hayne has a battle on his hands in such a fast-paced system, competing for a spot against players for whom the game is more instinctive.
Kelly and his coordinators were allowed to take Hayne, Davis and the rest of the 49ers through the new playbook on the practice field for the first time.
The NFL’s strict rules on coaches interacting with players on the field were lifted after two weeks focused on strength and fitness.
Hayne said last week he had a good grip on the playbook, but during Kelly’s time at the Philadelphia Eagles the coach was known for coldly cutting or trading players who did not fit in or perform.
Casualties included star running back LeSean McCoy, quarterback Nick Foles and Australian punter Brad Wing.
Davis has reason to be happy with the regime change.
Last season, under fired head coach Jim Tomsula, Davis averaged just 1.7 yards per carry compared to Hayne’s 3.1 and starter Carlos Hyde’s 4.1.
