Round Two was intriguing. Four teams who won their season-openers lost this week, while five who lost last week saluted victory.

That made for plenty of change on the rankings: a few teams crashing towards the bottom, and a couple jumping up a few places. There’s a new leader, too – but fans of the 2016 premiers might wanna look away now.

Enjoy, and see again you in a week!

1.Port Adelaide
Last week: 4

I had my doubts on whether they’d defeat the Swans, thinking Freo were so bad it flattered Port, but I was wrong. When the Port of the past might’ve faltered, this team took charge and finished off strongly. Brisbane at home next weekend should be a formality on this form.

2.GWS Giants
Last week: 2

Fell victim to the first quarter injury curse when Tom Scully was fell, and were sorely tested by the Pies – who are turning out to be a bit of a boogie team for the Giants – but they got the win. All focus turns to the Sydney Derby, and given both NSW teams are gunning for top four, I’m not sure the stakes could be higher.

3.Sydney Swans
Last week: 1

Huh. Puzzling last half against Port, to be honest. John Longmire and co will be hoping it’s an aberration, not the beginning of a trend. Vital Sydney derby coming up.

4.Hawthorn
Last week: 6

Let’s be honest – they were against a Geelong home crowd, a fair few pundits opinions and the media frenzy of the ‘Holy Trinity’. None of that mattered, and Hawthorn – led superbly by Jarryd Roughhead – held off a gallant Geelong in the best game of the year (so far). Scares me to say this, but are the Hawks of old returning?

5.Geelong
Last week: 5

Heartbreaking, but awesome. Games against the Hawks are never, ever predictable, and Geelong were gallant the whole way through. That last quarter was genuinely fantastic from the Cats, but they’ll rue this loss for a little while.

6.Adelaide
Last week: 8

Smarting from their loss to the Dons, Adelaide stormed to a win against the premiers in the grand final rematch. Great day, really, and they should be able to make it two in a row against the struggling Saints… should being the key word.

7.Essendon
Last week: 4

“Just don’t lose to Freo next week, and they’ll be right”, I said last Monday. Oops. I’m genuinely unsure how much stock to put into Saturday’s loss. They looked a different team from that one that defeated Adelaide a week prior, but I’m not sure whether or not their struggles lied within their own camp or Freo’s resurgence.

8.Richmond
Last week: 7

The internet critics will cry nonsense such as “MCG grand final advantage”, but they were beaten by the better team on the night. The premiers losing a grand final rematch would be frustrating, sure, but there’s no new doubts for mine.

9.Melbourne
Last week: 9

Did what most pundits would’ve expected them to do, but almost had a hiccup with Brisbane’s fightback. Good win, but they’ve got to get over another hiccup next week: their long-running losing streak against North.

10.Gold Coast
Last week: 11

Well, Stewie Dew’s men are 2-0 with a ‘home’ game over in WA to come. Fantastic start to the season, but North and Carlton aren’t exactly top-tier talent. The Freo game will be interesting. They defeated Freo at home a year or two ago, and in this form there’s no question they could do it again.

11.West Coast
Last week: 14

No JJK, no Adam Simpson and no home fans – usually a worry, but it was an excellent win for the Eagles on Easter Sunday. Three of their new kids kicked multiple goals, and Liam Ryan looks a genuine gun. Good times.

12.Fremantle
Last week: 16

If Round 1 was unfortunately all about the past, Round 2 was the future. Four players on their first or second game, a brand-spanking new stadium and a great win. Was a good weekend for Freo fans, but it’s imperative that they get more wins on the board. The Suns and Bulldogs in the next three weeks – both at home – are perfect launching pads.

13.Brisbane Lions
Last week: 13

Oh, Brisbane, team of raising hopes and breaking hearts. Poor first half, but their fightback was admirable. Experience such a poor first half again next week, though, and conventional logic suggests they’ll be not much hope of any such fightback – not against a red-hot Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval. Still, stranger things have happened.

14.North Melbourne
Last week: 17

The first half – particularly North’s inaccuracy – made me want to claw my eyes out, but the Kangaroos settled best and cruised to a win in the Melbournian sunshine. I was impressed, I’ll admit, and history tells us they’ll win against the Demons. Hmm.

15.Collingwood
Last week: 15

I’ll never wanna see footage of Broomhead’s leg-break again, but all things considered it was a spirited loss – as much as a contradiction that seems. Winning against Carlton on Friday night (why, oh why is it a Friday?!) is almost a pre-requisite for any improvement this season.

16.Carlton
Last week: 12

Some – like me – were fooled by the promising form they showed in the season-opening loss. Horrible day on Saturday, losing in a manner that surely would’ve surprised even the diehards. Their arch-rival awaits.

17.St Kilda
Last week: 10

I’ll be the first to admit I might have rated them too high after the beat Brisbane. They were properly dreadful against North. And this is a team supposed to be competing for finals? That’s genuinely funny.

18.Western Bulldogs
Last week: 18

Excuse the hyperbole, but the Dogs are in deplorably bad shape at the moment. With the Dons, Swans and Freo to come, there’s every reason to think they could be 0-5 soon enough.
