What a weird week. Brisbane and Collingwood the game of the round, Fremantle opting to have a bye early, Carlton deciding 20 minutes of challenging the Crows to be enough, Essendon and Port continuing their frustrating seasons and the NSW sides deciding they didn’t feel like winning this week.
That means a fun Power Rankings. Enjoy.
Last week: 1
Their premiership defence is running so, so smoothly. They’re top of the ladder, and they’re top of these rankings. There really isn’t too much else to say. North next week might be a cracker of a game, actually.
Last week: 4
Faced their biggest test yet against Port, and never faltered on route to a comfortable victory. This is a team that needs to be taken seriously. Very good chance to poach a win in Sydney against the wounded Giants.
Last week: 3
Probably as clinical a victory as you’ll get against a surprisingly valiant Blues side. The AFL might need to launch an integrity investigation into the Crows’ hamstring epidemic, though!
Last week: 6
They’re just about back to their old self, although winning against Essendon doesn’t have the prestige that the Bombers desire. Love him or loathe him, Sicily is a star.
Last week: 7
They had almost as many missing players as the Giants, yet still smashed them. Powerful display, and holds them in good stead for the next few weeks, you’d think.
Last week: 2
This is a side that is, all of a sudden, not a very good football team at their home ground. They’ve lost three of their past four in Sydney. Ignoring that, they’d be aggrieved to let that one slip. Hawks next week no easier.
Last week: 9
Rebounded from their loss to the Tigers in style. Played the best game of the round – one of the best of the year so far – against the Lions. De Goey probably the most vital player on the ground, and will fancy their chances of taking it up to the Cats.
Last week: 5
They had a lot of injuries, yes, but that was as awful as I’ve seen the Giants play in years. To borrow an oft-used cliche, Leon Cameron might be slowing to a crawl in his faltering Ferrari.
Last week: 11
They’re like West Coast in the sense most of us underestimated them. No doubt North fans would’ve been jolly as ever on the trains, planes and buses back home from the SCG on Saturday night.
Last week: 10
They won, but it was only against St Kilda. Still, they’re back in positive territory in the win-loss statistics, but knowing this team they’ll be ever-so-slightly hesitant about next weekend’s game against Gold Coast. Wouldn’t be unlike them to drop a match like that.
Last week: 8
Last week, I pondered how long Port would stay in the eight on these rankings. Apparently not long! Like Essendon, Port is such a frustrating team. They were dreadful against West Coast, and will be wary about the upcoming Showdown.
Last weeK: 12
Third win of the year? Yessir. In front of ‘home’ fans in Ballarat? Of course. Jack Macrae cracks forty disposals? Yuuuup. Good day at the office? You betcha.
Last week: 13
Huh. Probably the most travel fatigued team in the composition right now, yet still took it right up to the Bulldogs in Ballarat (I mean, where haven’t they played a bloody game this season). Catch the Demons next week on a bad day, and the Suns could snatch a win.
Last week: 14
This isn’t a very good football team at the moment. Lose to Carlton, and even the most diehard pundits will jump ship you’d think.
Last week: 12
Ew. There’s no words.
Last week: 18
Simply awesome day at the Gabba. Fast, fun and high scoring. The Brisbane fans were up on their feet, and they didn’t even win the damn thing. Yet, you feel like this team is something special in the making.
Last week: 16
Ugh. I don’t know how big of a hole they might dig for themselves, but whilst the team might eventually get out of it, Alan Richardson might not.
Last week: 17
For twenty minutes in the second quarter, this team shone brightly. For the rest of the time, they were admirable but outclassed by a much stronger team. Not the worst loss they’ll have, but it’s difficult to ignore their 0-7 form line.
