Brisbane won, the Eagles are top on the ladder, Essendon beat Geelong and Melbourne pulverised Carlton.

Fair warning: there’s a fair bit of change on the ladder this week, but this is what happens when the bad teams win and the good teams lose.

1.West Coast
Last week: 2

They’re flying high, a game clear on top of the ladder. They’re a genuine premiership threat. Nothing more to say.

2.Richmond
Last week: 1

They’ve been tamed by a rampant West Coast. Actually, they were demolished by a rampant West Coast. Say goodbye to first position on the ladder, Tiger fans.

3.Sydney Swans
Last week: 4

Nice of Ben Ronke to have a quiet day of one major, and allowing an up and coming forward by the name of Buddy Franklin to boot three. In all seriousness, it’s fantastic for the team to win one at home. Even if it was against Freo.

4.Adelaide

I said they’d move on quickly from he Showdown loss, and they did. Very tough slog against the Dogs, but any day they win by 37 in the wet, and Eddie kicks four goals, is a good one. Before anyone asks, I spent about an hour figuring out the Crows’ position. Yes, they move down, but only because of Sydney’s mammoth win the next night.

5.Melbourne
Last week: 8

Holy hell. At what point does a domination necessitate a mercy rule? Because no doubt a few Blues fans would’ve been thinking that. Just quietly, the Demons are third on the ladder.

6.North Melbourne
Last week: 9

Yup. This team is probably a finals contender – providing they don’t capitulate against Freo next week. Going on form alone, they won’t.

7.Hawthorn
Last week: 6

An unusual loss, and they’ve slipped out of the eight on the ladder. Tough clash against the ladder leaders next week, and expect Alastair Clarkson to demand some noticeable improvement.

8.Port Adelaide
Last week: 8

One of the most anonymous wins of the weekend. They dug deep, got the job done, and will now get the week off. All in all, a 6-3 record probably flatters them a little.

9.Geelong
Last week: 5

An insipid effort against the Dons. Baffling, really, but one would expect this team to bounce back quickly.

10.Collingwood
Last week: 11

I’d argue this side played in one of the weekend’s more intriguing games. They withstood a very gallant Saints in the first half before opening the game up and beginning to dominate in the second. Good win, but Jordan De Goey was the real star.

11.GWS Giants
Last week: 10

They’re spiralling, this team, and it’s getting worrying. They’d be trying everything to get players back from injury.

12.Essendon
Last week: 17

What? What? I dunno what happened to this Essendon team on Saturday, but I’m sure their fans ain’t complaining. Very, very good win.

13.Brisbane Lions
Last week: 18

Yes! Been a long time coming for the Lions, but they demolished Hawthorn. Nobody expected that, and they’ll savour it. It’s imperative that they take that form into the Sydney game next week.

14.Gold Coast

Honestly, their 40-point loss against Port could’ve been a lot worse. Fortunately for the Suns, they’ll have a week off to recoup after a trying nine rounds before facing Geelong at (yes, this is true) Metricon Stadium.

15.Western Bulldogs
Last week: 12

A putrid day for the Dogs in Adelaide. I couldn’t give a damn if they’re playing in a hurricane – a score of 2.14 should never eventuate in footy.

16.Fremantle
Last week: 13

Yeah, nah.

17.St Kilda
Last week: 16

And a rough season gets a little worse. In fairness, they were competitive throughout the game, but I’m thinking their first half was an aberration, and their second was the norm. Which isn’t a good thing.

18.Carlton
Last week: 15

Oh, man. From ecstasy to agony in a week. Horrible outing on Sunday. Back to square one, in a way.
