What a boring weekend of football. That’s not too controversial an opinion, is it? A lot of blowouts, and no particularly exciting games. Alas, the rankings must forge onwards, so here we are. Enjoy.

1.Richmond
Last week: 2

They’re a freakishly good football team. I’m not sure I have enough superlatives to describe their domination of the Dons, but do not mess with the premiers – especially not at the MCG. They’ve bumped the Eagles off the top of these rankings as well.

2.West Coast
Last week: 1

Headed into Saturday night’s game, most expected a straightforward win. Their tenth straight. In a way, that rung true… until a few nervy moments in the last quarter as the Saints surged. Not one they’ll want to remember, but they’ll head into the bye to ready themselves for the second half of an excellent year.

3.Melbourne
Last week: 3

I’ll admit I jumped to the worst-case scenario thoughts of the Demons pulling a Demons performance as the Bulldogs dominated early, but this is a more mature team than previously. They adjusted, then dominated. Awesome encounter next Monday against the Pies – I can’t wait.

4.North Melbourne
Last week: 5

This team is inspiring, really. A little bit of danger surrounding a potential Lions upset, but they didn’t let that influence them and powered to a comfortable win. Paul Ahern’s debut, too, something special. Big, big game next week: Geelong at the Cattery. Win that, and they’ll be all but confirmed for finals – if they ain’t already.

5.Sydney Swans
Last week: 4

They would’ve been furious that the Blues were leading at halftime on Friday night, but it was difficult to assume the scores would stay that way. They didn’t, and the Swans won, but there’s still some lingering doubts over this team. They’re going well, but I feel like there’s something missing.

6.Collingwood
Last week: 6

Thumped Fremantle, as most expected. Clinical win – but what on earth was with that last quarter lapse? Conceding seven Freo majors in around 15 minutes late in the final quarter might be saying something about the mindset of Collingwood.

7.Geelong
Last week: 7

Well, that would’ve been one of the easiest games of the year so far for the Cats. Paid no attention to Gold Coast’s return to their home, and took a stranglehold on proceedings from the first bounce. Gary Ablett producing a lazy three goals and 37 disposals was the cherry on top.

8.Hawthorn
Last week: 9

Just quietly, this was the closest game of the weekend. They’re incredibly hard to beat in Tassie, but for a long while there it looked like Port might just defeat them. Nope. They steadied, and got their first win in four weeks.

9.GWS Giants
Last week: 12

Brilliant. Much-needed. Electrifying. Whatever adjective you wish to use, it’s a very important win. They can’t bask in this for too long, though: more wins are needed and fast.

10.Port Adelaide
Last week: 11

Were competitive the entire day, but fell away late. I’ll be honest, it was one of the worst endings to a close game I’ve seen in a while. Just no excitement. Nevertheless, they’re still in the top eight on the AFL ladder, largely thanks to the Crows’ loss.

11.Adelaide
Last week: 10

Ironic that their season officially became sputtering out of hand after a loss to a team that was also seeing its season sputter away. Good game, but they’ll be shocked at the loss. Two bad losses in a row, and the prognosis aren’t good. Some relief next weekend: they’re versing Fremantle.

12.Essendon
Last week: 8

And that’s how you destroy two weeks of promising work in 120 minutes. Eviscerated by the Tigers, and that was a bad a performance as you’ll see by the Dons this year. That’s saying something.

13.Brisbane Lions
Last week: 14

Like their Queensland counterparts, the Lions went into their clash with an atmosphere of an upset. Also reminiscent of their counterparts, they faltered. The difference being they were a helluva lot more competitive than the Suns, and despite the heavy loss, they kept persisting.

14.Western Bulldogs
Last week: 15

Like a few teams this round, they were genuinely in the game early. Leading at quarter time, the Bulldogs fell apart after that point to be comprehensively beaten. The endeavour was there, but the execution certainly not.

15.Gold Coast
Last week: 13

So much excitement about their return to Metricon, but that was a horrendous performance by the Suns. Massively disappointing. There ain’t anything else to say.

16.Fremantle
Last week: 16

Arguably the first legitimate rebuild-ish match of an already long rebuild, the loss isn’t surprising. A bit of a gallant, albeit ineffectual, fightback late, and seeing both debutants send through their first goals was a little nicety for fans. Now, the big test: will the notoriously stubborn Lyon keep the youth in the team after a loss?

17.St Kilda
Last week: 17

10 more minutes, and I’ll bet they would have won that one. Great last quarter fight back, but how much stock do we put in it? It’s a difficult question, but one that might be answered next week as we’ll see how they go against Sydney. A sniff of an upset? Perhaps.

18.Carlton
Last week: 18

One of their better first halves of the season so far, but Sydney inevitably came back into the match. Probably one of the occasional peaks we’ll see in such a struggling team, but there’s no ignoring the fact that they’re 1-10.
