Australia’s Daria Gavrilova will look to advance out of the first round at Wimbledon for just the second time in her career when she takes on lucky loser Caroline Dolehide. Join The Roar for live scores from 8:30pm (AEST).
Gavrilova has often struggled to reach her potential on the biggest stage. While she gets enough points at smaller tournaments across the year, grand slam success has stayed away from here at this point.
The best grand slam effort of her career to date was two fourth-round appearances at the Australian Open in 2016 and 2017, while she has only been to the second round of the most famous tournament on the tennis calendar once.
Granted, grass is Dasha’s worst surface, but the pressure is seriously on her to start succeeding if she ever wants to move to the top of the world rankings.
This should be a good opportunity to move out of the first round in truth, playing a lucky loser who is only in her third grand slam appearance.
‘Dasha’ comes in off a second-round loss at Birmingham and a first rounder at Eastbourne though, so her confidence will be well and truly down.
Dolehide will be unknown to most viewers around the world, but she lost in the first round to Eugenie Bouchard at Birmingham, before winning two qualifying matches for The Championships, only losing in the final round, before being given access to the main draw at Wimbledon.
Prediction
Gavrilova should have no problems dispatching Dolehide here, but then, we have said Gavrilova wouldn’t have problems in the first round at Wimbledon before (like last year), and she has. Still, it’s nearly impossible to tip against the Aussie.
