The State of Origin series decider is almost upon us, with Game 3 set to be played at ANZ Stadium. But what do the stats say about the history of deciders in one of Australia’s most hotly-contested sporting competitions?

In total, there have been 19 Origin deciders to this point, with the Queensland Maroons taking out 13 of them, and the New South Wales Blues only able to grab four with two games deadlocked in drawn deciders (Before extra time was brought in).

However, the worrying part of that stat for the Blues is the amount Queensland have been able to win recently.

While the score in deciders was once very even between the two states, Queensland have run away with the ledger in recent years during what has been the most dominant stretch in State of Origin history, winning the last seven deciders on the trot, stretching all the way back to 2006 when they started their run with a 16-14 victory in Melbourne.

New South Wales had won the decider in 2005 though, beating the Maroons at Suncorp Stadium by 32 points to 10.

Out of those seven deciders, two had been played at ANZ Stadium – the venue for Wednesday night’s game in Sydney – with the Maroons winning in 2013 by 12 points to 10 in a thriller, and in 2008 by 16 points to 10.

In short, the Blues are going to need a major turnaround in recent fortunes on deciders to take victory in the game.

In saying that, the Blues do have an incredible record at Sydney’s Olympic Stadium in Homebush, where they have won 17 of the 27 games there, although that record has slowly come back to the pack during the Queensland dominant spell, as one might expect.

With the most dominant figures from that era retired though, the Blues have a chance to start evening out the stats in this game.
