Australia look increasingly likely to bring two spinners to the New Year’s Test at the SCG, with Queensland spinner Mitchell Swepson added to the Test squad for the third game against New Zealand on January 3.
The 26-year-old was included in the squad for tours of India and Bangladesh, but didn’t make his Test debut. In six Sheffield Shield matches this season, Swepson has taken 12 wickets at an average of 26.58.
His lone international appearance was a T20 international against England at Edgbaston last year. He took two wickets for 37 runs in four overs, while scoring three runs – unbeaten – with the bat.
“Having Mitch in Sydney gives us the option to play two specialist spinners if the conditions demand,” said selector Trevor Hohns about the news
“We will make those assessments when we get to Sydney,” he added.
As part of the squad change, Peter Siddle drops out of the side and will be released back to the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League after James Pattinson passed him as Josh Hazlewood’s replacement for Boxing Day.
