Despite missing out on the role at last year’s FIFA election, Prince Ali bin Al Hussein will again have the support of The Football Federation of Australia (FFA) when he stands for president of FIFA.
The presidential election, scheduled to take place on the 26th of February, will be another shot for Prince Ali to earn the position of president.
It comes after he stood against incumbent Sepp Blatter last year, but would ultimately lose. Australia were one of the countries who decided to vote against Blatter for Ali, and will keep their vote down the same channel this year.
Chairman of the FFA Stephen Lowy believes that after reviewing the credentials and manifestos of each candidate it is the correct decision to continue its support of Prince Ali.
“Prince Ali is a long-standing and consistent advocate for reform at FIFA and his manifesto spells out a clear vision of the way forward.”
Prince Ali has stated that he has a strong vision for reform at FIFA if he was to be elected president, and Lowy said it was a big part of the reason Australia will cast its vote for Ali.
“Australia strongly supports the reform package and will vote in favour of each proposal,” he said.
“It is critical that the reforms are implemented with conviction and that they signal a new beginning for FIFA.”
Former president Sepp Blatter was suspended for eight years and as such will be unable to stand, meaning FIFA will have a new president.
