The ladder-leading St Kilda have a host of big names returning for their crunch clash with a Carlton outfit desperate for a return to form. Join The Roar for live scores from 3:20pm (AEST).

Ross Lyon has transformed St Kilda in one pre-season and despite a significant injury toll, has the Sainters flying high at the top of the AFL ladder early in the year. Only the Pies have found the answer to St Kilda’s run and effort thus far in 2023, with the Dockers, Bulldogs, Bombers and Gold Coast all falling victim to a team on the rise.

Even the loss to Collingwood in Round 5 appeared to instill further confidence in the St Kilda group and the Blues will need to be at their best in order to match the organisation and structure that has been influential in winning matches for the Saints across the opening weeks of the season.

There are few concerns around the Blues, with a lone loss to the Crows last weekend their first real slip-up of the season, after a Round 1 draw with the Tigers. In between, Geelong, GWS and North Melbourne have proven incapable of matching the attacking firepower of Carlton and the Saints will be well aware of the danger presented by Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay in the attacking half.

Team news sees Carlton lose key half-backman Adam Saad, yet also welcome back Mitch McGovern; adding some real starch to the Blues’ defence. Elsewhere, Carlton look to be in excellent shape.

The Saints are finally welcoming back some important soldiers. Tim Membrey and Jack Steele are two key inclusions, with a few more to follow in the coming weeks. Anthony Caminiti has starred for the Saints early in the season, yet will miss this clash due to suspension.

Prediction

As impressive as the Saints’ early season run has been, it could well come to an end today against a Carlton side that has done little wrong in 2023 and looks likely to compete strongly for a top four position come season’s end.

Curnow and McKay have begun to find better connection with the midfield and despite Saint Kilda looking a far improved unit under Lyon, they do look destined to struggle through the middle part of the season when up against some of the more polished teams.

Carlton by 21 points.
