Show Preview

One of the most emotional moments on the Australian sporting calendar takes place when Collingwood and Essendon meet at the MCG on Anzac Day. Join The Roar for live scores from 4:50pm (AEST).

The annual clash between the Dons and the Pies has rarely had so much riding on it in recent years. Both teams have shot out of the gates in season 2023, occupy spots in the top four and look likely finals contenders this season.

For Brad Scott’s Bombers, the turnaround has been remarkable, with the towelling up of Melbourne in Round 5 symbolic of their immense improvement. Only the high-flying Saints have beaten them thus far, leaving the red and black sitting second on the ladder and hopeful of a strong showing against the Pies today.

Collingwood began the season as the team to beat and still look strong, despite a concerning loss to Brisbane up north and a few sloppy quarters that have appeared a little out of character. Nick Daicos continues to star each week and the Bombers will have a specific plan to curtail his influence, which has bordered on Brownlow-like early in the season.

Team news sees Essendon without Zach Merrett in a huge blow, and the Pies also without a key man in the form of Taylor Adams. Both players miss the match after tackling dangerously last weekend.

Jordan De Goey is back for Collingwood, and a make-shift ruck duo of Billy Frampton and Nathan Kreuger will have the difficult task of matching the in-form Sam Draper and Andrew Phillips.

The ruck could be a key battleground, with the Bombers seemingly holding a significant advantage. Should they be able to contain Nick Daicos through a potential match-up with Will Setterfield, the Dons could well set up a crucial Anzac Day win that will confirm their finals credentials.

Collingwood will continue with their frantic pressure on the ball, and a willingness to take up advanced positions and risk quick turnovers. Like Brisbane, Essendon will need composure and grunt to expose the tactic, and the battle will be an intriguing one.

Prediction

Good luck tipping this one: it looks a ripping encounter on paper and one sure to be in dispute deep into the contest. Are the Bombers really ready to contend? Today could well tell us.

The Pies certainly are, and considering their experience and the sense of occasion, I’m tipping them to get home in what could be one of the games of the season.
