It’s the annual Big Freeze at the ‘G for King’s Birthday as Collingwood and Melbourne lock horns in a blockbuster at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores from 3:20pm (AEST).
It is first and third on the premiership ladder when the Dees tackle the Pies at the home of football, with Collingwood looking to fend off the challenge of Port Adelaide for top spot and Melbourne hoping to ensconce themselves in the top four as the season rounds the halfway point.
The Pies have not lost since the 6th of April and simply do not look like losing anytime soon, whilst the Demons have been inconsistent of late. Their recent loss to Fremantle was reversed with a win over the Blues last week and there were much better signs, despite the contest being a dour one at best.
Both teams will be there when the whips are cracking at the end of the season, yet this match will provide a preview to a potential semi-final match-up and could clarify the exact gap between the Pies and one of their closest rivals.
The mid-week distractions around suspension star Jordan De Goey will not have helped Collingwood, yet there are plenty more weapons for the Demons to deal with this afternoon and the Pies have enough talent to cover his absence in the short term.
Team news sees De Goey replaced by Patrick Lipinski, who plays his first match for 2023, with the Pies otherwise unchanged and healthy after their win over West Coast in Round 12. The Demons have a few concerns, with Michael Hibberd into the squad and Clayton Oliver, Jack Bowey and James Harmes all unavailable.
Simon Goodwin will have to shuffle the magnets a little, especially with Oliver such a key man for the Demons and combating the threat of Nick Daicos off half-back.
Prediction
The MCG could produce something special today, with the Big Freeze setting up the atmosphere for the contest in front of what looks like being a sell-out crowd.
The Pies will enter as favourites and should have the class to win, yet if Jake Lever and Steven May can dominate down back with vintage performances, the Demons could stun the ladder leaders and produce an upset that reminds everyone of their credentials.
Collingwood by 11 points.
