Richmond and Carlton meet in the AFL’s traditional season opener at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:20pm (AEDT).

Well, here we are again. Another season of AFL football is set to begin, with a host of clubs holding high hopes that 2023 will provide something far more satisfying than last season.

Two such clubs are the Tigers and the Blues. Richmond clawed their way into the finals in 2022, yet were knocked out in a tight one against Brisbane. In truth, they had not been the same powerful team that won multiple premierships across recent teams. Despite some fearing a late charge, the Tigers’ elimination final finish was probably reflective of where they truly sat in the pecking order.

Carlton won just a game less than the Tigers, yet missed the finals altogether after a late fadeout that saw them unable to claim the final win that would secure them a spot during the last few rounds of the season.

It hurt Blues fans a lot, yet they had improved markedly under coach Michael Voss, and 2023 looks to be a season where anything but finals play will be perceived as a report card fail.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has a strong squad at his disposal. Dustin Martin looks in excellent physical shape on the eve of the season, while Tom Lynch, Daniel Rioli, Shai Bolton and new recruits Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper are all ready to fire. Now the longest-serving coach in the league, Hardwick will oversee what many feel will be a resurgent Tigers.

Carlton will be without Sam Walsh for some time to come and Zac Williams is also a critical loss. Otherwise, the squad looks healthy and ready, with Patrick Cripps, Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay all selected.

The injuries open up opportunities for youngsters Ollie Hollands and Lachie Cowan to debut, with Blake Acres and Adam Saad also certain to be crucial in providing run for the Blues from the back half.

Prediction

The ‘G’ will be sold out for this one and it should be a season opener to remember. Not for some time have the teams looked so evenly matched and the passion with be palpable all around the ground.

The Tigers might just have a little too much experience as a unit and Carlton look like a team perhaps requiring further time to fully develop. If the 2022 Richmond turn up, the Blues will win; yet something tells me this Tigers team will be on a mission this season.
