Hi Ben – an old chestnut really. Bred on World Series summers during the 1980s, I LOVE ODI cricket. I can accept that 15-game triangular series are too long, and that 50 overs itself might be too long. My view? Either (a) 50 overs a side retained, but in batches of three-game series (although I’d still prefer a maximum of five) or (b) 40 overs a side, triangular series of 10 games – 9 plus one final – all played within the space of three weeks and be done with it each summer. And yes, part of the appeal for me remains the ebb and flow element – there’s still a good portion of a match in which a team can recover and/or build an innings, etc.

Hi Chad – am unconvinced of its overall fan appeal, even given the fact that Europe has shrunk in travel access terms. It is worth noting that in its earlier editions the European Cup was played on a home-and-away basis (still within groups), country to country travel over a period of a couple of years, then a final round (semis and final) in a particular country. So in many ways it’s a throwback, a retro idea. And yes, as has been said, I believe England has already bid to host both semis and the final (to be at Wembley).

Hi Justin – caught the last 20 minutes of the game on Thursday morning on SBS. Cracking finish and great to see them through.
Celtic survives Champions League group stage
Hi Don – I’m a cricket fanatic, and have been for over 25 years. So again, the issue isn’t that it’s some cricket. Although I don’t have FOXtel, which could prove my undoing in the “watch it” part!
BBL: A bit baseball-y, but worth a look?
Hi Andy – that was a rather comprehensive thrashing for the Aussies, really – as far as the single match goes. I think I picked a 1-1 series, but 1-0 to the South Africans would’ve been my next choice. The Proteas deserved to win. Better batsmen and bowling, although I offer a half-apology as I was someone who pre-series thought Australia’s attack was the weak link. In some cases the batsmen were barely better. But it was a good, quality series really, some enjoyable cricket played.
Reality check for Australian cricket
Sometimes I get the feeling that it’s just probably me, but I for one would love to see Frank back in the competition. I always quite liked him, to be honest. And feel that some of his Socceroo/Briz era has been easily looked at by pundits via the increasingly rose-tinted glasses that we have now. Remember, Frank was still managing an Aussie side with a far more irritating World Cup qualifying journey, less matches generally in the intervening period, and a comparatively less public-captivating domestic competition to select from, too.
Farina in box seat to be Sydney FC coach
Hi everyone – just turned on the telly. Felt like the only pre-game pep-talk that should have been given to the South Africans was a dose of extremely loud maniacal laughter – delivered by any member of the Aussie squad.
Australia vs South Africa Test: live cricket scores (Day 2)
Back to back 200s for Clarke. Back to back 100s for Hussey. Insane.
Australia vs South Africa: 2nd Test, live cricket scores (Day 1)
And now a SIX from Huss. This is getting ridiculous…
Australia vs South Africa: 2nd Test, live cricket scores (Day 1)
200 Clarke! First man to EVER score four double centuries in a single year! Beats Bradman and Slicky Ricky for the record!!! WOW!!!
Australia vs South Africa: 2nd Test, live cricket scores (Day 1)
And for the Richie Benaud fans out there we even got a double 2/222!!!
Australia vs South Africa: 2nd Test, live cricket scores (Day 1)
Most runs ever scored in one day’s play by one team in a Test at Adelaide, say CricInfo. Incredible.
Australia vs South Africa: 2nd Test, live cricket scores (Day 1)
SRL did their 509 inside 104 overs – a rate of 4.89, AUS gunning along at 5.42, and probably won’t get more than the maximum 90 overs today. Super impressive stuff, that.
Australia vs South Africa: 2nd Test, live cricket scores (Day 1)
According to one SAF fan on Twitter, SAF conceded 503 in a day against England at a Test at Lord’s in 1924.
Australia vs South Africa: 2nd Test, live cricket scores (Day 1)
HA! – the CricInfo gang had it in their commentary… SRL scored 509 in a day against BNG at P. Sara Stadium in 2002, apparently.
Australia vs South Africa: 2nd Test, live cricket scores (Day 1)
Hi Suneer – am unable to actually watch all this on the telly today. Argh! Call me Mr Ignorant but one would assume this has got to be one of the most pace-attack pulverising single days (and probably opening days) of any Test in yonks, surely? Where’s someone from Wisden, Nine or ABC Radio to tell me if I’m right (and then probably quote the next-highest total/run rate seen in similar circumstances…?
Australia vs South Africa: 2nd Test, live cricket scores (Day 1)
All Socceroo games in some form on SBS, one A-League game a week on SBS. As someone without FOXtel, I’m happy enough with that. Thanks to all at the FFA for their involvement in securing some broader coverage of the national team and domestic competition on SBS. Bravo!
FFA Football TV Rights announcement: Live blog, updates
So, ideally, what we want to see is AUS making about 450 today, achieve virtual innings parity by stumps, then leave day five open for a real blast. Say 95-100 overs? Get South Africa to have a crack, maybe set 230-250 off 45-50 overs for a dramatic last hour tomorrow?
Australia vs South Africa: 1st Test, live cricket scores, updates (Day 4)
Hi Suneer – am following via CricInfo.com today… Sure, there’s been a day lost, but methinks South Africa shot themselves in the foot yesterday by either not quite hurrying the scoring up or by not declaring. I had picked a draw pre-match and can’t imagine Australia would be stupid enough to lose 20 wickets in a day-and-a-half.
Australia vs South Africa: 1st Test, live cricket scores, updates (Day 4)
Hi Lisa. Right-o – I’m very late in on this one, but my heart said SAF 1-0 a few weeks ago. My head says a 1-1 draw. But SAF starts with the more settled bowling attack, definitely. Both batting line-ups have reasonable potential, though.
Why this is such a tough series to predict
Hi Jsteel – initial reaction? NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Considered reaction – possibly. If we can find a suitably-agreed-on type of ball and session times. Personally, I’d leave Boxing Day/New Year’s in Australia well alone. But sure, some might think that Australia v Zimbabwe in Hobart (for example) could well be enlivened with attendance beyond 6pm… I’d prefer twilight Tests to start with (say 12-8pm) rather than a 2-10pm slot. I wouldn’t play every single Test into the night though – otherwise it’s another point of difference that ODIs have lost, really…
ICC and CA back day/night Tests
Hi AD – I agree. Nothing wrong with T20 as a form of cricket. I just have zero personal attachment as a fan to any of the revamped BBL teams. Shield, yes. Ryobi Cup, yes. And I too am looking forward to the first Test v SAF. Sure, it’s nice a team based in Australia won a Champions League event centred around cricket. But that’s about it for me at the moment.
Unbeaten Sydney Sixers win Champions League
Hi MIke – all I will say is I am UTTERLY STOKED to see SBS showing a Sunday arvo live A-League game EVERY WEEK this coming season (if reports are true). As a semi-casual observer of the league itself and an ongoing admirer/appreciator of the world game in general I would definitely find it more enjoyable to follow the national domestic top-flight comp with SBS on-board coverage-wise. So presumably one live game a week, Socceroos on just one-hour delay after FOXtel, and hopefully a highlights package of A-League action somewhere in there, too… Sounds brilliant. Rollon the 2012-13 summer of…er, …football! (and this from an avowed cricket nut!)…
Want to fix Australian football? Concentrate on the A-League
Hi all – saw the highlights on telly this morning. That was definitey “not cricket” – just men behaving stupidly. Leave the implementing of the laws to the officials for starters (although yes, the shirt-pull on Huss was indeed wrong), and Mr S. Warne appears to simply be unable to stop being a human headline (the swearing, figer-pointing and ball-tossing was completely un-necessary). And then Samuels – bowling action debate made redundant if you are the kind of person who thinks Murali is also okay – actually ends the night with a nasty injury that is way more serious than the rest of the hi-jinks over the evening. It hardly does anything for me as a cricket fan to encourage further viewing of this particular domestic competition, either. Well, that’s my view anyway. And the penalty – a single BBL game and $4500 fine for Warne? Piffle. It should have been more than $10,000 – at leat – and a minimum of two games off, in my opinion.
Finally, some passion in the Big Bash
