Interested in the popularity and growth of football in Australia, especially the A-League. Also passionate about the history of the former National Soccer League. I am a supporter of the Australia Cup, and believe a National Second Division is achievable.

True, the FFA Cup match in your last paragraph was a FC verses CCM game at Leichhardt Oval (I was there). It went into extra time, & the carpark ratbags became rather impatient, wanting to cause a ruckus outside the stadium.
Oddly, I heard afterwards the Wanderers distanced themselves from the unknown group. It was a small collection of ratbags dressed in black attire. Goons for hire, basically.
Very uneventful. Scratched cars, broken street signs, etc. Mummy boys wanting to be tough nuts.

You had me at “orgasmic conclusion”. 3 out of 4 of the major clubs made the finals – Victory, FC & City (with WSW narrowly missing out). I think the A-League will be fine. In Scotland, the code is built around Celtic & Rangers. Similarly here, Victory & FC are our anchor teams. If they’re firing, the rest of the competition is in capable hands.
A-Leagues facing financial oblivion, or just spiteful anti-football media seeking an easy kill?
The Victory fans certainly weren’t reciting Shakespeare during the match.
Nor were they saluting peace signs with their fingers.

My only gripe was the supposed 7:45pm start of the game was delayed.
I would have preferred a 7pm start instead for families.

Yup, I was mentally gone, Grem. I had the Mariners written off after the first half. Melbourne had won on statistics, it seemed, & Central Coast were happy to soak-up the attack.

I’ll say one thing about the train trip to Gosford from Sydney…
Make sure you do it during the day, because at night, there’s no river views – only the sight of one’s reflection in the window.

Thanks, David. To me, everything came down to the final ten minutes of normal time. Before that, the Mariners looked shell-shocked. I still don’t know how Jackson’s boys did it.

I’m a bit up & down. Great crowd!

We’d have to get in quick with Sam Kerr, as she’s already 30. Lock that game in now, I’d say.

It should have been 10-0, if not more. I’m sure the Newcastle boys ended up at Timezone afterwards.

The Barcelona game was awesome, I agree. It lifted the profile of the A-League too.
Sooooo, who is the next EPL team to come Down Under?
I’d rather AC Milan, but that’s just me.

I was going to say… I think the game may have damaged Newcastle’s brand – and the EPL for that matter.

True that. It’s possible there were more offenders, in other clubs.
I’m sure there have been salary cap breaches too, which were hidden, & will remain shrouded in secrecy.

Maybe it’s a confidence issue. I thought he left Australia a tad early too, but his stocks were up, probably thanks to the World Cup.
Newcastle are also one of the biggest clubs in the EPL. Going somewhere smaller might have been a better move (for game time).
