I think many transformations look iffy along the way.
Planning is one thing, but humans are complex animals.
Judge them at the end (October).
Or judge now and think the end result at WC is not correlated – your call.

I think we are still within the time window this WC) to see the transformation play out.

If nothing else, EJ has been an iodine contrast, revealing us either (A) bivalent (the psych/management meaning of) or (B) comfortable with ambiguity.

Depends on how much of a transformation he’s pushing through, for what specified goal. Doesn’t always work when one wants so it may take longer, affect the stats.
The runway has been so short. He talked up how it wasn’t, then realised it was, changed plan, changed players, overhauled the team, is now saying the plan is ‘progressively coming through’ – qualified words, not because he’s been beaten down by commentators but because he’s been beaten down by results and stark realisations of his own (I am guessing). My point net net of all that is that he has a focus on WC tournament dynamics. I believe he is a good coach to have there. I believe he chose Skelton as C for localised dynamics. EJ makes calls and may fail, but WC is his thing.

NW probably spoilt QC’s game, so i think verdict there is ‘unfairly’

(How much of a Slipper doppelganger is Montoya though)

And it really should have been 1-3. Argentina was the game we had to win; Tom Wright and Jed Holloway played their way out of WC in that game but imo Quade Cooper also lost credibility in the coach’s eyes, fairly or unfairly, in that game. Slipper lost captaincy. 6-2 bench was EJ’s fault but experienced players = high expectations

0-4 I think needs to be seen in the context of his first 4.
2003 0-2 vs NZ in TriN before SF is closest? (Arguably quasi-mathematically equivalent to 0-4 if you multiply 4 x 0.5 factor adjustment for first games).
2015 Japan lose-lose as long as your arm before WC win vs SA (once, but)

I recall that Billy Beane had a few detractors along the way

Worked for me, but I get it, it was a big call

He may be out of form. You may be right. But I worry too much about the Wobblies to voodoo him

Different qualities but Lolesio has more potential than Foley imo

I too thought QC should be in France. But I moved on and am getting behind the decision.

Spot on

Rennie was the perpetual almost winner. Lovely guy, kept us comfy with sensible quips about shifting this & that. Also nil WC experience. Eddie’s in your face, defiant and experimental. He also does bloody well at WCs. Not convinced? Think 0-4 says it all?
You may be right
I may be crazy
Oh, but it just may be a lunatic we’re looking for
(Apologies BillyJ)

He smashes it at WCs

But if he beats the ABs for a 3rd time at a WC, against the odds, what will you call that?

Dang. Thanks Harry.
Saucy sells huh?

Airports are emotional places and leaving home with a young team, he would have hoped to get some generic patriotic Aussie support. People have reasons not to give it, but have some heart

Tony, how many reads do the analysis / technical pieces get? Like HJ’s TomH piece? They are not negative pieces but informative and can generate a good debate.

Counter-factuals galore, but for me Rennie is more predictable: lots of yellows, lots of injuries, and maybe the boys would have pulled through, who knows. To me, EJ gives us a wider standard deviation + volatility in the lead up – ie. unpredictable, but more likely to W on the big ones in a WC cauldron, while also piling on some Ls while he’s tweaking the plane midflight.
