I kinda think that’s the point. He will continue to do his internship, become better and better, and then when it’s time it’ll be his team. There’s only two really good halfbacks in the game at the moment, Cronk and Thurston, the rest need to keep developing. Drawing comparisons is useless, but Croft and Cleary look to be the next “big” halves in the game. Where Cleary is having to do it all himself, Croft is learning from the game’s best and it will do the world of good for him.

Croft anointed Cronk's Storm heir apparent

This might be true, but, in fairness, we see 80 minutes (less usually) a week of Adam Blair. The talk from the younger forwards at the Broncos about Blair’s attitude to training, his work ethic and his leadership is all very positive. Although he doesn’t always make 100m or 30 tackles, his leadership has apparently been very inspiring at the Broncos (who’s bench forwards are the best in the entire NRL). He would be a handy pick-up for any rebuilding club.

Storm – Points for: 493 (2nd). Points diff: 181 (1st). Have I taken the bait hook, line and sinker, or are you a few sandwiches short of a picnic?

The Storm's main rival could well be from outside the top four

The closest we’ve come is Michael Quokka, and even he was merely a Rooster.

Should Hayne stay or should he go?

I have a mate who was in sports science and he was doing some work with the Eels a few years back. He said every training run, Hayne would be wearing the hi-vis no contact shirt, he only took part in some of the training drills, always left the sessions early. Talented as he may be, you could never build a team around someone with that kind of attitude. Coaches need to be tougher on players like Hayne.

Should Hayne stay or should he go?

10/10

Should Hayne stay or should he go?

100%.

Terrific Tigers trump Manly

The last pass was only as forward as the pass Api gave for DCE to score. The universe is balanced. The Tigers were anything but terrific.

I cannot get on board the Moylan hype train. Surely his stock is falling, or at least dropping to mirror his true worth. The Panthers have more recently been better without him, he has a sloppy passing game and drifts in and out of matches (though more out than in). Many described him as being the next Darren Lockyer, I think of him more as the next Jarryd Hayne. He might have a run of good games that the media will brand a ‘stellar season’ and he may even feature in a NSW series win, but for all the fuss, he’s a fizzer.

Nice tale. To keep the game alive in the suburbs of Sydney, the local stadiums are surely the answer. “The scoreboard is a literal brick s**t-house. But underneath it sells beer which comes cold in a can and costs six bucks.” – I just became instantly thirsty.

Leichhardt is old but it's better than Disneyland

True, but at least the Broncos are generally entertaining and the background isn’t a stadium full of empty seats.

NRL issues apology for Souths vs Bulldogs

It’s a weird one. To the letter of the law, and with all the rage about refs being consistent, the Peachey ‘no try’ decision was fair. Though if it were my team, and especially if it had’ve decided the match, I’d be ropable. Luckily for the Panthers and their supporters, it wasn’t the case. However there is also an argument or point to be made about how they found themselves in that position twice in a short turnaround.

Twelve talking points from NRL Round 22

Honestly, the best thing about having a fat bloke on your team was never finishing last in the sprints at training.

Retro Round: Bring back the fat bloke

Might be time to give Dank a phone call.

Flanagan urges his streaky Sharks to lift

Every team should be made to carry a fat bloke on the bench.

Retro Round: Bring back the fat bloke

I reckon they will be. If he turns up like this next year, I’d be putting him in the reserves for a few weeks.

You’ve lost your marbles son. The refereeing may be a blight on the game (though last night’s game was very well officiated, even as a Cowboys fan) but the biggest issue by a long way is how poorly the game is being attended in Sydney. The Storm are winning because they are the best team. They get great home support (and did through the season they played for no points) and have a great club culture. The most unwatchable aspect of the NRL are seeing tens of thousands of empty seats at games held at ANZ and Allianz. Not an issue in the other League playing states.

You absolutely do not have to feel bad for Aaron Woods.

It's Round 22 but the Bulldogs are on break

When you watch a game like last night, and most games they’ve played this season, I find it hard to understand how people complain about their “boring style of football”. They are surely one of the more creative teams to watch and I can’t think of many teams who you could consider to be more exciting to watch. The way Smith, Cronk and Slater combine around the ruck, regardless of where they are on the field, shows they are willing to back themselves and attempt to post points from anywhere. Couple that with the two more destructive wingers in the game, the best centre in the game, Kaufusi hitting the edges and their big guys up the middle and they’re anything but boring and predictable. Hard to watch the Cowboys try so hard and come up well short, but that Storm team are firing on all cylinders. I think a full strength Cowboys team against Storm in the GF would’ve been the ideal end of year finale.

I know this happens on the big screen at AAMI Park, it definitely helps watching live so I can only imagine it would help the viewer at home.

It’s all the refs' fault, right? Here are the actual facts

My two cents: I’d like to see only the captain allowed to speak to the referee, and the referee speak to the captain only by his name, all other players are referred to by the number on their back or their position on the field. In/at the play the ball, the foot must be used and the defending team are not allowed to move forward until the hooker has picked up the ball to run or pass. Once an attacking player is on the ground, refs use a “countdown” call to reduce wrestling on the ground, could also be used if a player is left standing to reduce people being wrestled to the ground after ‘held’ is called: “Held! Completed! Movement 3-2-1” then a penalty if there are still players in the ruck. Incidental/accidental high shots (slipping up, grabbing around the neck on the ground, coming over the shoulder and hitting the head) warning first and then penalty. Careless high shots first infringement for the team = warning, second team infringement = sin bin.

League must look to union to stamp out dangerous tackles

All this salary cap B.S. that consistently surrounds the Broncos is starting to get old. It’s always the Broncos, the Storm, to a lesser extent the Roosters. Sure the Broncos are a one team League town, but they still compete with other teams for sponsorship (Lions, Reds, even the Titans, Suns), they are no different to any other club in that regard. Geographically they’re as close to the Gold Coast as several NSW teams are to each other. Smaller population and more spread out. From day one the club has been run well and the systems in place to bring players through a junior talent ID system have been in place for decades. The majority of our top 25 are locally produced players. The Storm compete with just as many AFL teams as the Sydney teams do with each other in the NRL but seem to be doing fine (as are the AFL teams). Why never any mention of the Warriors? NZ starting spine among other NZ players. Mannering, Hoffman. Is it because they’re not as successful? Need to find a new bone to pick or a new tree to bark up.

The missing piece in Broncos signing spree

A lot of the better halves and ball runners in recent competition have been Touch Football players. Adrian Lam, PJ Marsh, Matt Bowen, JT, Ash Taylor, Corey Norman, Shaun Johnson, Benji Marshall, Scott Prince, Jamie Soward. Chris Flannery was an Aus u/18s player, hell I think Cliff Lyons still plays Touch. I know there’s an allegiance nationally between NRL and TFA but maybe NSW need to do more work with NSW Touch at grass roots level. Pretty sure Matt Moylan was a NSW touch rep at junior level, he’s apparently the next big thing (though he’s not fit to shine Locky’s boots).

Where have the NSW halves and hookers gone?

9 losses, six wins. The non-pass does not show up in historical records, game two was lost because NSW weren’t the better team.
