I think you are missing the point Rick. The MRP punishes the player but doesn’t offer any advantage to the team that may be disadvantaged on the actual game day (in effect the team that is fouled is disadvantaged, and the teams after them gain from their loss without any loss to themselves).

By them sitting out the same time is too subjective. Imagine if a no name player is “fouled” by the oppositions best player. You make that no name player sit out the rest of the game just so their best player can’t come back on.

I feel the best officials in world sport that I have seen are in rugby. Their use of yellow cards and red cards are hardly disputed, and they are used correctly. I’d say AFL’s biggest issue with a “card” system would be the number of umpires on the field … most other sports have a single lead official, so therefore all decisions are made by a single individual instead of multiple which would be the case in AFL.

The AFL must adopt a send-off rule

I imagine coaches and players are less likely to support players who aren’t able to control themselves due to the consequences. So it would be more a matter of peer pressure policing than anything … can the coach risk playing a player prone to such acts??

I think a 5 minute sin bin would be a better option in the AFL. A man short in the game, even for just 5 minutes, would be a huge disadvantage. Sin bin offenses would have to be made obvious to players and clubs though.

A great rider and an unfortunate way to bow out … one last Grand Tour would have been ideal for his last foray!!

Michael Rogers announces cycling retirement

Check out OGE’s latest backstage pass for Paris-Roubaix … I love them, especially how excited they get with a win … “Oh fruit!”

Aussie Mathew Hayman wins Paris-Roubaix race

A great win by Hayman. You could see near the end he was lettign Bossan Hagan and Boonen chase down most the attacks … he happily sat back biding his time. I think he won it (with heart) after Van Marcke made his attack on the second last cobbles section. Hayman was dropped almost immediately, but by the end of the long cobble section he had hitched back onto the back of the leaders.

A great ride by him.

How about Sagan’s bunny hop over Cancellera’s bike???

Aussie Mathew Hayman wins Paris-Roubaix race

It was a great ride by Sagan. I loved his comment at the end when asked why he kept pushing when he could have waited for the two chasers and simply out-sprinted them. It was along the lines of “no one wants to work with me, so I just do it myself. Kwitasoki was about the only one who helped in when they tried to breach the gap to the leaders, and about the only one that helped keep the break away with a fast approaching peloton.

He is definitely a fresh breath for the sport and a great rider (who is very exciting). The Gladiators body language didn’t look strong on the chase to the line (shoulders and hips swinging lots … think he tried his hardest but the day had taken it’s toll).

I loved Sagan’s wheelie at the end too (most riders collapsed over the line).

Peter Sagan wins Tour of Flanders

@Daniel T I once checked out the EPL ratings for a Manchester derby earlier this year. Each A-League game over that same weekend rated higher than that EPL blockbuster on Foxtel. So not only does the AFL & NRL ratings exceed the EPL but so does the A-League.

DEVIL'S ADVOCATE: Foxtel's new deal great on paper, will it be in reality?

I’d personally prefer to watch skillful players in any sport than athletes, unless of course it is an athletics meet.

MCLACHLAN: The AFL is ready to be the game for all Australians

Billy Slater won that Rexona challenge a few years running, where it pitted stars from many sports against each other.

MCLACHLAN: The AFL is ready to be the game for all Australians

I think he has done a great job of encouraging this too … you are only a sure pick if you are performing week in week out. No longer do reputations alone get you into the team!

Read an interview with Risdon a few months back and he said having his first taste with the Socceroos an d Ange’s words since have really pushed him on to keep improving his game week in for Glory. It sounds like Ange not only has encouraged competition for spots but also the ambition of players to be better for their club and country.

How Postecoglou is keeping his players on their toes

Agree with Kaks … Smith is far from proven in his defensive capabilities. Which may be more of a liability against Jordan on the counter than against Tajikistan. Smith does have plenty of toe though, so he may be asked to sit deeper against Jordan. Similarly Risdon has played at times deeper when needed.

Same same, but different result: Steady as she goes will do it for the Socceroos

He doesn’t jump though. He falls before the contact is made. Still shots show him going down before the contact, and a jump would involve lifting the legs not trailing them behind like Kamau did.

Has the balance of A-League power shifted to Melbourne City?

I think the term “best league in the world” is generally applied to the EPL because of it’s competitive nature more so than having necessarily the best teams:

Ligue 1 – PSG have already wrapped up the league (4th in a row)
La Liga – Barca or Real Madrid? Atletico or another team might give it a crack every now and then.
Bundesliga – Bayern Munich (won 12 of the last 20), Borussia Dortmund about the only other team to consistently challenge them
Serie A – Juventus won last 4, and then one of the other Milan teams might challenge
Primeira Liga – In it’s whole history only twice has the title not gone to the big 3 (Benfica, Porto or Sporting)

Premier League manager exodus could restore European dominance

Most AFL clubs have feeder clubs in their respective state leagues. So could play them as “pre-season” friendlies (and still would be largely intra-club).

How do you solve a problem like pre-season?

Glory (women) was run by Football West prior to this season.

Matildas' Asian domination means the Olympic dream is alive

Could similarly be argued by giving clubs a security they can become more professional. That is, sponsors know they get national exposure each year, clubs can build facilities for the future (e.g. Mariners academy), local governments can support clubs, can build strong and wide ranging supporter bases, can set-up professional administrative staff behind the scenes to run marketing, management, finances, etc. (without the security it would make it harder to attract the best staff, as only short term contracts could be offered).

Promotion and relegation can have a negative effect in that clubs may not invest in infrastructure, as no certainity to stay up (so if they drop the bigger stadium costs too much or can’t sustain their academy), the drop is from professional to semi-professional so most players would lose their contracts (or be forced to find other work), less sponsorship dollars, smaller supporter bases (especially if suburban teams are promoted compared to broad scale appeal clubs), clubs focus more on season to season than long-term etc. etc

Also each year A-League clubs would have to prop up promoted clubs to get them up to scratch. Because atm the gap between the NPL and A-League is too big. How many players from Bentleigh Greens would get an A-League contract with that same club if promoted? I’d imagine instead they’d have to poach most players from the Melbourne team relegated. Where would Bentleigh play? Most likely have to play at AAMI because their own ground not up to scratch, and they wouldn’t invest it until they have played a few seasons in the A-League. Who pays for all their additional costs? Doubt someone like City Group would swap clubs or the Victory co-operative. So it would have to be up to other A-League clubs to give them a promotion payment to be competitive. How is the administration at Bentleigh? Can they afford to hire full-time staff for many of the key administrative roles require to run a professional national team?

Promoting ups and downs in the A-League

So you go from Perth Glory with 7,000 members and an average attendance of around the 8 – 9,000 mark to Bayswater (which represents a small suburb in central Perth) that has a home ground for a few thousand, and probably only a few hundred members (most who are probably players).

Glory also wouldn’t be able to keep 90% of their squad, so do all their players become free agents (I’d imagine most would just move to Bayswater … so much for those players that actually won the NPL title for Bayswater, and or came up through their youth ranks). So Bayswater just become another Glory team … they could even play out of nib Stadium so they have a stadium up to scratch for the A-League.

Would Tony Sage pour his money into an NPL team only? Doubt it! He’d probably also not put it into Bayswater, so how does this NPL team suddenly cover the huge costs involved with the A-League? Would sponsors jump ship in WA? QBE recently celebrated 15 years sponsoring the Glory. Why would a sponsor jump on ship with an NPL team with limited appeal, and a high chance of going down again?

Similarly this wouldn’t work in Sydney or Melbourne either IMO. Blacktown and WSW both in the A-League? And no Sydney FC? Or how would WSW survive if replaced by another western Sydney team in the A-League? How many fans would Bentleigh garner compared to Victory or City?

Promoting ups and downs in the A-League

Goodwin definitely pressing, and I don’t see Oar getting a run for the upcoming games given his time out of the game. Goodwin is in career best form.

Socceroos take petro-dollars as Postecoglou eyes new faces

Article in the West Australian paper today about Risdon, and he commented that he has really tried to apply himself each game since his call up. I think it really has shown, and being captain (stand in) of the Glory at such a young age (only a year older than Geria) has really shown he can handle that added responsibility.

Socceroos take petro-dollars as Postecoglou eyes new faces

The physical ground size I reckon would be too small

The danger of nostalgia; the beauty of suburban footy

Guess some of the fringe players may be pushing for selection to the Olympics too (if they qualify). Got to impress when they get the chance.

Will they sit back a bit more in the second half, so as to conserve energy??

Goal difference could be important for these qualifiers!

China only beat them 2-0

The big difference is the purchasing power. The average Aussie purchasing power is around the $40,000 mark whereas the average Indian purchasing power is around the $5,000 mark. So in effect 4 million Aussie viewers translates to a lot more dollars than 4 million Indian viewers.

Want to watch the World T20? Well, right now you can't

Considering Fox similarly don’t show the IPL anymore (too pricey and poor ratings), I’d suggest they would be cautious of paying too much for the rights of the world cup.
