A bad game is a bad game and we use sport to indulge ourselves from bigger issues, but at the end of the day we have to call a spade a spade. If he scored a hat-trick and set up some tries it’d be written very differently, but he didn’t and he along with a lot of his teammates were sub-par and as such deserve criticism for playing well below their capabilities. Terrorist attack or no terrorist attack. I feel for the people of France and the clubs but it didn’t stop other French clubs from performing well over the weekend.

FULLTIME – Scotland are through and even though they stumble into the quarter-finals, they get the win and more importantly move into the next round. Although Vern Cotter will have some major concerns over his side’s performance, he will be no doubt happy with the end result and for everyone watching, we bore witness to a fantastic game of rugby. The game started with frenetic, end-to-end pace that carried on for the entire game. Samoa left their best performance until the very last game as Rey Lee-Lo had a unbelievable game at inside centre. Once again, discipline ruined what was an otherwise very solid performance from the Samoans as Scotland’s technical ability at the breakdown and the set-piece just edged out the free-flowing, running rugby of Samoa.
Captain Greg Laidlaw was fantastic for the Scots and was the biggest difference maker for the boys in blue as his personal haul of 26 points guided the Scots into the quarters. Wales play Australia in just over 10 minutes and while neither side will be too worried about the Scots following that performance, both will be keen to avoid Pool B winners South Africa. Thanks for joining us in tonight’s coverage and apologise for any delays in updates. Take care and enjoy the next game!

76′ – TRY! Samoa have a scrum five metres out as a Samoan try would put them right back in this game. Samoa win the scrum and pick and drive towards the line. They win a penalty after Scotland are penalised for going off their feet. After a couple of phases Matu’u crashes over after a timely inside ball from Jack Lam as Samoa aren’t finished just yet. Faapale converts to make it a three point game once again. SCO 36-33 SAM.

73′ – TRY! Scotland go back for a penalty advantage after the TMO said Nel was held up. Matu’u comes on for Leiataua as Scotland have a scrum five metres out, the scrum turns into a mess and amidst the chaos Greg Laidlaw emerges sniping from the back of the scrum and slamming it down on the line and most likely sealed the win for Scotland in the process. Laidlaw converts his own try. SCO 36-26 SAM

71′ – Scotland go for the maul and after he initial push is unsuccessful, the Scots work through the phases as they march towards the try line. Great Samoan defence but Scotland continue to push as a try here would probably seal it. Willem Nel is the one who eventually gets over the line but it looks like he is held up by Samoan captain Kahn Fotuali’i. SCO 29-26 SAM.

70′ – Sean Lamont comes on for Stuart Hogg and becomes just the second player in Scottish rugby to play 100 games. Scotland win a penalty after Samoa are penalised for making contact in the air. SCO 29-26 SAM

55′ – George Pisi absolutely hammers John Haride in midfield as the kiwi born flanker is absolutely rocked in the challenge. Hardie does well to retain the ball and after recycling a couple of phases, Scotland win a penalty after Faasavalu is penalised for not releasing. Laidlaw smacks over another penalty from 49 metres as Scotland extend their lead to six. SCO 29-26 SAM

52′ – Ma’atulimanu Leiataua comes in blatantly from the side as Samoa continue to battle with their discipline. Laidlaw makes no mistake with the boot tagging on another penalty as Scotland lead for the first time all game. SCO 29-26 SAM

50′ – Scotland win a penalty at scrum-time after Samoa were penalised for pulling the scrum down. Laidlaw decides that its better to point for the posts after Scotland’s progress at the lineout was limited and once again the Scottish captain puts the ball over the black dot to tie things up for Scotland. SCO 26-26 SAM

47′ – Scotland win another penalty and once again Russell goes for the line. Looks like a cleaner Scottish maul off the lineout but Samoa defended it brilliantly coming through the middle and isolating the ball carrier and win a scrum for their efforts. SCO 23-26 SAM

44 – Scotland are penalised for disconnecting and reconnecting the maul. Samoa bring it down the other end as Rey Lee Lo continues to have a fantastic game at inside centre. Lee Lo breaks to the halfway line but his pass to Fa’atoina Autagavaia does not go to hand as Scotland intercept. SCO 23-26 SAM.

41 – we’re back underway here as Jack Lam makes a strong run through the middle shaking off multiple Scottish tackles. Samoa go wide but Perez mixes up his run with outside centre Pisi as the Samoans are penalised for obstruction. Russell pings it into the corner as Scotland attempt to maul it. Faosiliva is penalised for a high shot as a bit of a melee breaks out but Scotland go to the line once again.

HALFTIME – If it stays like this it looks like we have the game of the tournament so far as Samoa have saved their best performance for last. Samoa are playing some care-free, free flowing running rugby as if they get one more try they’ll have secured the bonus point. Bit of a pity to be honest as if Samoa played like this against Japan, we could have been looking at a winner takes all decider here in Newcastle, but instead the Scots are battling for their Rugby World Cup lives as a Scottish loss would set up a first time quarter-final berth for Japan, should they beat the USA.
Apart from the scintillating, frenetic pace displayed by both sides, to sum up the first-half Samoa have been ill-disciplined and the Scottish have been poor in the tackle. Scotland’s best chance of getting back into this game is by keeping it tight, playing for the territory and the lineout, and using their superiority in the maul to move the ball up the field and over the line. Meanwhile for Samoa, if they can improve their discipline (which is a lot easier said than done with this group) and continue to play this free flowing style of rugby they are a real threat to continue to run up the scoreboard and put an end to Scottish hopes

Agreed. It’s funny, If it was “Jackson shines in Wasps win” It wouldn’t get half the comments or hits but that’s the world we live in. Not to say we write for the hits but its good to expose your work to a larger audience.
