Yes. Spot on. You nail Sydney as a standalone comp, suddenly we can be back in the 90’s, with Brisbane and NZ-Polynesia following suit.
Honestly though, for finances to increase, grow the pie. Have final series instead of just one.
Expansion, NRL Super Bowl and the Polynesian heavyweight title belt
haha. funny.
I should clarify (still chuckling), Canterbury would still get home games. And arguably, being in a heavyweight comp, their brand value stands to increase globably.
Expansion, NRL Super Bowl and the Polynesian heavyweight title belt
The thing about NZ is the AFL is also looking to expand there. NZ is not a race to be better than Rugby. It is a race to be the second biggest sport in any city.
Wellington has soccer as #2
Auckland has league as #2
Christchurch is up for grabs.
Expansion, NRL Super Bowl and the Polynesian heavyweight title belt
I agree with WA as an AFL state. That’s why the Western Jets would be based in Ipswich and there would be a targeted number of games only in WA. These could increase over time if there is enough interested.

Thanks Paul 🙂
Well said. Can you think of a clever or tried and true way to test and see if enough people want this to happen?
Expansion, NRL Super Bowl and the Polynesian heavyweight title belt
Yeh, get what your saying. This kinda a hybrid draft/national rep team style.
Expansion, NRL Super Bowl and the Polynesian heavyweight title belt
Thanks Soda Chook raffle at the local RSL. That’s probably about right. 😁
Personally I like finals. And if you have not one, but four finals series, I think there would be a market and supporter base.
Expansion, NRL Super Bowl and the Polynesian heavyweight title belt
haha. yeh thats ok.
the big plus of wa team is the time zone. so just have maybe 6 games out there a year. rest of home games in ipswich/suncorp.
A simple plan for NRL expansion
Two 9 team conferences then become;
1. Tigers, Roosters, Panthers, Eels, Rabbitohs, Dragons, Manly, Sharks, Raiders
2. NZ (Auckland, Canterbury), QLD (Moreton Bay Dolphins, Western Jets, Broncos, Titans, Cowboys) Knights, Southern Storm (who also represent southside of Brissy)
Canterbury would play most games in Sydney but also derby v Warriors in Christchurch. Try to have Bulldogs having priority of South Island NZ players.
A simple plan for NRL expansion
Make it the Western Jets. Based in Ipswich, representing Western Corridor of Brissy and WA.

Nick, thanks for putting time and thought into this article mate.
Few thoughts. First up, the AFL have been successful in a two teams per city approach. Develops rivalries in those cities. Adelaide (Crows/Power), Perth (Dockers/Eagles), Sydney (Swans/GWS), SE QLD (Brisbane/Gold Coast).
I’d instead focus on a couple of dual region teams, and also build a nucleus of teams in SE QLD.
5 New teams, or teams with names changed:
NZ: Auckland Warriors, Canterbury Bulldogs (just with Bankstown dropped)
QLD-WA-SA-VIC: Moreton Bay Dolphins, Western Jets (Ipswich, Bombers, WA), Southern Storm (changed from Melbourne Storm, and represents Southern Brisbane and Victoria-SA-Tassie),
11 UNCHANGED TEAMS: Tigers, Roosters, Panthers, Eels, Rabbitohs, Broncos, Titans, Cowboys, Raiders, Knights, Dragons, Manly, Sharks.
18 team comp. Pens down.

Was thinking same thing Potsie.
Distribution of playing talent between Australian and NZ is key. Great to hear RA open door for NZR players to play in our teams.
My concern is still Japan though. Just think there needs to be synergies between Top League and club rugby, and then the Super side of things. If right connections made Japan won’t be a competitor for talent but an ally.
Champions League and State of Origin-style fixtures headline Rugby AU's bumper broadcast offering
Agree.
For other players, my pick would be an ANZAC Barbarians v American All Stars (USA + Argentina + Canada).
Either that, or players 7’s tournament?

Do it in three sets. https://www.theroar.com.au/2020/04/09/give-super-club-rugby-a-crack/

Some good questions you have there Franklin.
1. How long Cannes play in Qld Country?Look there is something being missed. If a NZ team travels to Oz, why not take advantage of that and turn into a home game for Nz team. In fact I missed a trick in the article. Ozzy teams could also be dual city.
2. Why would tahs fan support chiefs rebranded as Randwick. Key is including, local talent. Success will be another reason. Kiwi style of play also very attractive to watch.
More, not fewer, Australia-based Super Rugby teams are needed to save the game
Well they shouldn’t be, they would lose market share to NZ dual city franchises.
More, not fewer, Australia-based Super Rugby teams are needed to save the game
Open to all and be specific. What works, what doesnt and why?
1. Blues, Crusaders and Brumbies remain unchanged.
2. Reds and Waratahs get rebadged. Opens the door then to SOO series.
3. Melbourne Highlanders, made up of a handful of current Rebels. Primarily based in NZ, with many games also in Melbourne.
4. Qld Country Hurricanes. Again comprising some of Rebels. Primarily based in NZ, with many games also in Melbourne
5. Randwick Chiefs. Deliberatetly included yo be polarising, but equally brand awareness. Primarily based in NZ, with many games also in Melbourne.
Remaining Rebels and staff distributed amongst teams.
More, not fewer, Australia-based Super Rugby teams are needed to save the game
😂 good one Ron. Crusaders eould dominate.
More, not fewer, Australia-based Super Rugby teams are needed to save the game
In NRL, the Kangaroos don’t need to play a whole season in the provincial State of Origin to be successful. Three games is more than enough. The rest is club footy.
So if NRC happens, it would need to be supported with a SOO series. Concentrate best talent from clubs to provincial, then provincial to Wallabies.
More, not fewer, Australia-based Super Rugby teams are needed to save the game
Melbourne would still be there as the Melbourne Highlanders.
More, not fewer, Australia-based Super Rugby teams are needed to save the game
Like NRL, there would be catchments available for each team.

Imagine the Melbourne Cup. No fans just horses. Haha. The horseys will have to social distance. One horse every second barrier. 😛
Here's where the 2020 AFL grand final should be held
Relocation… tadaaa….
Judging by response to article, I relocation would be unpopular and have too much resistance.
