Sport fanatic but unusually for an Australian my favourite sport is American Football with my favourite player being the ridiculous Devin Hester.

I’m unclear at what your trying to argue.

I work in software, I build the software which is sold, I make a wage, my CEO makes a much larger wage, many times that of mine even though he is not the one directly making the product. Which I feel relates directly to your comment of

“You show me another incredibly profitable service industry where the limited number skilled employees get paid $19 per hour whilst their managers get paid 1.64million per annum, that is close to 40 times. Look at your manager at work today and ask how would you feel if you were the “star” of your office and brought in the revenue and he earnt 40 times what you did”

Here is a list of the Top CEO Pay ratios from the US where I’m sure many examples of what I perceived you to be asking can be found http://go.bloomberg.com/multimedia/ceo-pay-ratio/

Should college players be paid?

All fair points. But I would argue every major private company in the world is an example of the skilled employee being the one who does the work and CEO making many many times their wage.

I know in the company I work for I am the skilled worker, I am the one who does the work and thus you could say I am the star, however it is the CEO who earns 40 times more than me.

Should college players be paid?

I think that many players get fantastic opportunities at first class universities and while some choose not to take advantage of what is at offer I would think many do attempt to make the most of it, especially if they are not at that elite level. Take Duke for example, until this past season they were a joke of a football team trying to build up their program. I’m sure numerous players who went there were extremely happy for at least some exposure to D1 football and the chance to impress while also privileged to attend a very expensive private university. I’m sure they are not too upset they are not getting paid. To put it in perspective, it costs approximately $62,000 a year meaning players on full scholarships are getting $248,000 worth of excellent education board at one of best universities in the US, should they choose to take advantage of it.

I tend to like the idea pools of money being setup to help players progress with life after their college sporting careers. Should that be finishing degrees / furthering their education. Injury rehab or compensation. I like the idea of a percentage of jersey sales being split amongst the team but i imagine a number of smaller D1, D2 and D3 universities rely on this money for their programs and to help fund the numerous sports that don’t get such large crowds.

just some thoughts…

Should college players be paid?

Nice article, good to see local sports making it onto the roar as well.

Australian Gridiron posted some great photos from the game on their facebook page. There is a 3 quick succession photos of Luke Edwards catch which make it look even more ridiculous.

I think when you mock the author he has the right to be a little annoyed. You can disagree with opinions but to state that an opinion article written by a fan as “sorry” is a bit of poor form. Perhaps that was not your intent.

Your predictions cam out pretty close. Entertaining end to the Denver game but no surprise in the final result.

NFL Divisional Round Playoffs - who'll join the Seahawks and Pats?

kinda shows your system would have worked well to hold attention but still allow the true winners to stay the same.

Fixing the F1 points problem

I really hope we get to see lots of Ice Hockey coverage, but knowing the Australian networks we will see 1-2 hours of highlights pumped into a prime time slot.

Why Canada's failure at the 2014 IIHF World Juniors in good for ice hockey

Hard to argue with those facts.

Fixing the F1 points problem

Great article, interesting thoughts on how to keep it competitive to the end. I’m a fickle F1 fan so I don’t know that much about it, but I would think trying to make the constructors championship as important as the individual and make that a close competition would be a good move. It would be great if somehow the constructors championship was not almost always the same as the drivers. A relegation to the bottom teams would be ideal to keep people interested in the lessor teams but of course you need to have a 2nd tier competition that could compete, which would not be easy.

Perhaps introducing points for position on poll, Practice sessions, Hot laps (time trials), mid way point through race positioning to increase potential overtaking. F1 already appears to be a whole week of ceremony and pomp before the race begins so why not allow teams to start to earn points through the week. I’m not sure if this would ultimately work or whether the better teams / drivers would just get larger leads.

Fixing the F1 points problem

Agreed… How is this not thought of during the bidding process and the subsequent voting. Just a joke.

FIFA set to move 2022 World Cup to winter

I agree that against the Panthers Defence Kaepernick won’t have the same freedom to run. I felt every viewer at home and in the stadium on 3rd downs knew Kaepers was going to run it and even Green Bay knew as well but they continued to lose containment on him due to ill discipline. Something I don’t think we will see from Carolina.

I’m in agreeance with you on all your picks.

Colin Kaepernick: A song of ice and fire

I would hope the OLine will get markedly improved again in 2014 with the resigning of Matt Slausen and the rookies on the right having a full off-season under their belts. While Cutler was sacked a lot less in 2013 (alot of that to do with quick 3 step passes) he still had way too many QB pressures from opposing defences.

Chicago Bears tie future to Jay Cutler

I would say Cutler accomplishment has been he has been the unquestioned starter on his teams for the past 8 seasons in the NFL. Not exactly an easy accomplishment while not being outstanding he’s still a solid starting Quarterback. Two Quarterbacks were chosen in the draft before him, Vince Young and Matt Leinart and they aren’t exactly doing anything these days.

Chicago Bears tie future to Jay Cutler

You pretty much nailed it Dom. Cutler was going to be a huge free agent if they let him hit the open market with lots of teams chasing a solid QB. There was no one else out there that was going to be available and be an upgrade over Cutler and relying on the draft to pick up a Quarterback in an offence that is in a win now mode is a huge gamble.

Chicago Bears tie future to Jay Cutler

Add Chicago Bears. They went from having a top 5 defence to worst in the league while becoming the second highest scoring team in the NFL. If the defence was able to stay at half what they were last season they would have easily taken the NFC North and been an actual threat in the playoffs instead of the 8-8 team they became.

Not the prettiest of passes by McBriar but fantastic to see him throw it 30 yards.
