North Queenslander born and bred. I enjoy watching Rugby League, Union and Cricket. On the weekends you may see me shouting at the refs from the Southern Stand at 1300 SMILES Stadium or playing on a rank turner at the Wanderers' Cricket Club. Congratulations to the Australian National Cricket Team for bringing home the Ashes. Now, time to take out the Proteas.

The Tonga v Scotland match was sensational. Kept me on the edge of my couch for the full 80. Hopefully we see another cracking match tomorrow morning with USA v Cook Islands. This has been a fantastic tournament so far.

Australia needs to make space for rugby league internationals

Why are the Raiders playing the Warriors twice in the pool matches? I think one of those games is meant to include the Cowboys.

2014 NRL Auckland Nines: Draw, start times, and preview

Truly the peoples team. If anyone has a few minutes spare, I recommended searching up Menzie Yere’s highlight reels on Youtube. Very skilled and highly entertaining player.

PNG daring to dream at 2013 Rugby League World Cup

A very well written and pleasant article Yousef. Brilliant way to start the day. It’s always to great to see fans of both codes of rugby speaking fondly of both games. This World Cup promises to be a game changer. Although I’m not openly saying that I would like to see England beat Australia in the final, I wouldn’t shed a tear if it happened. It would be great for the game there and England Rugby League really needs to catch a break. However, I’m concerned about their preparation. It’s been terrible. Hopefully it helps to solidify the group and fires them up for the game, rather then tear them apart. Looking forward to a great contest.

Rugby League World Cup 2013: a watershed moment?

I think that’s a given. Unfortunate in a way that Segeyaro is out, but the good news is that Wabo will get to have more gametime! PNG are my pick for the most entertaining team of the tournament. Not afraid to keep bringing out the hits.

RLWC predictions: England to win

There are local comps in all of the represented nations at the World Cup. However, you do raise a fair point. Despite many teams being stacked with NRL talent, it will not dampen my enthusiasm for the tournament. I don’t think the objective of the World Cup was to convince Aussies that League is a world game like you say. I think it is aimed at trying to increase the games profile and to give lesser known players the opportunity to represent their home nations. You’ll see no shortage of passion from any of the teams contesting the cup, running from the Kangaroos to Cook Islands. I highly recommend watching the game Chris mentioned, it will be a cracker. Fiji at Rochdale as well will be a great game. I don’t think Australia will win any of the matches against the stronger nations easily. Against England and NZ especially, they will be close games. There may be a few blowouts in the pool matches, the same is the case for the Rugby World Cup. At the end of the day, I am just thrilled that there is another month of rugby league left to be enjoyed before we have to sweat every day over the developments of the Ashes series. BTW Chris great article, like you I backed England to win the tournament but after the recent developments I am not too sure. Stories of players going off the rails, no Graham, the loss to Italy. I hope they can recover and really do catch the Roo’s out cold. Either way, looking forward to Saturday night. Coinciding the game with my birthday barbecue, I just hope I can see the game clearly by kickoff!

RLWC predictions: England to win

I think as Chris recently wrote, England are looking to pull off a sting. They will surprise many teams yet and I have them in the final. Whether they win or not will be determined on their performance in the games leading up.

RLWC predictions: England to win

Very well said Martin. The Cowboys already have a fair PNG contingent of players. I wouldn’t mind if the Kumuls team became a feeder for Cowboys but we already have two, soon to be three with the upcoming introduction of the Townsville based QCup team. This will work wonders for PNG Rugby League, I hope the Kumuls do well at the World Cup. I’ll be backing them along with Australia.

PNG's road to rugby league's top tier starts in Queensland

Nice looking team picked by Sheen. Great to see Tate back in the green and gold, his perseverance has paid dividends. A full Cowboys contingent picked in the team, can’t argue with that.

Greg Inglis out to continue scoring streak

I know of Hiroo Onoda, who continued fighting in the Philippines 29 years after Japan surrendered during the Second World War. He continued fighting as even though he had seen leaflets dropped by American planes informing him of Japan’s surrender, he refused to believe that his nation would do such a thing. When he was discovered by a Japanese adventurer named Norio Suzuki in 1974, who convinced him of Japans surrender, Onoda claimed that he would only surrender to his unit’s commanding officer. Suzuki then went back to Japan to track down Onoda’s commanding officer, who had since become a bookseller. When Suzuki returned with the officer, the officer officially relieved him of his duties, meaning that he did not formally surrender and therefore shame his honour. Talk about commitment to a cause, JOC take note!

James O'Connor to take talents to the Northern Hemisphere

I had a dream a few nights ago. I was at the Millennium Stadium watching the opening match between Australia and England. Even though I have never been to Wales, let alone Millennium Stadium in my life, it looked exactly as it does in real life. Perhaps it was forged out of my memories of watching the Wallabies play there. Anyway, I can recall the vivid scenes I witnessed. 70,000 people filled the stands, the atmosphere was electric. The game underway on the field below was brutal. The English were intense and I remember talking with my father about how the Kangaroos seemed ‘shell-shocked’ by the Poms aggressiveness. England raced out to an early lead thanks to a nice back-line move which saw one of their wingers score in the corner. The conversion was missed but they soon scored again, thanks to an intercept pass thrown by Cronk. After England went out to a 10-0 lead I remember the Kangaroos hitting back. The game was locked at 10-6 when I woke up, eagerly awaiting Saturday’s clash. I haven’t been this excited for a sporting event in recent memory. My interest in this world cup has even surpassed my excitement for the Origin series this year. I don’t care what the knockers will say, but this contest will be the best League World Cup ever.

It's time to silence the Rugby League World Cup's critics

Nice read Wiz, great to see mass excitement for the Cup. Can’t wait for the weekend, I’m going to try and watch every game live.

WIZ: Tonga to join the big boys' table at Rugby League World Cup

I would love to see a tri-game test series against Australia and New Zealand every year. League’s response to the Bledisloe.

Will rugby league ever become a global sport?

It is amazing that France were on the same tier as England in league only a few decades ago. Given the recent growth of the sport, it can be safe to say that the Les Chanticleers will become a force again.

Rugby League World Cup preview: France ready to rise again

Apparently there is around 40,000 registered RL players in France, that’s about 15,000 than New Zealand. With a few more years of training and expert coaching, they may become the prophesied ‘4th’ Rugby League power.

I agree Oikee, I think Vidot has potential. Mills is a solid player and the Broncos need some cover in the backs. Lowrie is a workhorse in the Dallas Johnson mould and a very handy player. Hopefully the Broncos are still looking to reel in Smith, K Hunt and Milford. I can’t stand to see the Broncos in such a sorry state for another season.

Broncos bolster 2014 squad with Mills, Vidot and Lowrie signings

I think it is. But things are becoming more competitive now in International League, which I wholeheartedly support.

All Blacks vs Kangaroos: the ultimate Bledisloe Cup clash

I wish the Wallabies still had players like the greats of yore.

All Blacks vs Kangaroos: the ultimate Bledisloe Cup clash

Can you then explain to me how guys like Brett Sheehan, Joe Tomane and Cooper Vuna, who were all average league players (or in the case of Sheehan and Tomane, solid cup players) have all represented the Wallabies? In Brief I’m sure you can find examples of players from both codes that were average in one but switched to another only to become successful. It doesn’t really mean anything.

All Blacks vs Kangaroos: the ultimate Bledisloe Cup clash

Australia excels at League. Give the Kangaroos a search on Wikipedia. Apparently we’re pretty good at sailing as well, we just won the America’s Cup a few weeks ago.

All Blacks vs Kangaroos: the ultimate Bledisloe Cup clash

Don’t listen to the haters Bob, I agree with your posts.

All Blacks vs Kangaroos: the ultimate Bledisloe Cup clash

Here’s some history on the Kangaroos mate. I don’t like anyone being misinformed about their greatness:

The Australian national rugby league team (or the Kangaroos) have represented Australia in senior men’s rugby league football competition since the establishment of the ‘Northern Union game’ in Australia in 1908. Administered by the Australian Rugby League, the Kangaroos are ranked number one in the RLIF World Rankings. The team are the most successful in Rugby League World Cup history, having contested all 13 and winning 9 of them, failing to reach the final only once, in the inaugural tournament in 1954.

All Blacks vs Kangaroos: the ultimate Bledisloe Cup clash

I wouldn’t. That’s not to say the Springboks forwards aren’t monsters, but you can’t monster Leagueies like Gallen, Scott, Bird and Lewis. Just because the Wallabies can’t contain them doesn’t mean the Kangaroos forwards wouldn’t.

All Blacks vs Kangaroos: the ultimate Bledisloe Cup clash

Alright, so they win one world cup out of 13 and all of a sudden with a larger playing pool they’d demolish the Kangaroos. That’s some logic you got there Tigranes.

All Blacks vs Kangaroos: the ultimate Bledisloe Cup clash

I disagree In Brief. I think that the Wallabies would take players like Thurston, Cronk, Smith, Slater and Inglis any day of the week. If Folau could make it in a season, then you can bet your bottom dollar any of the aforementioned Kangaroos could. You cannot deny that Quade Cooper and Nick Phipps are not on the same skill level as Thurston. If the Kangaroos forwards trained to Union laws, then they would make the Wallabies as well.
