Probably could have chosen a better term Late at night! My point is that Sicily’s was a legitimate tackle and his opponent’s head hit the ground not because Sicily had an intention to body slam or pile drive him or because it was a poor or irresponsible tackle, but because of a natural random collective footy action over which had minimal control. He copped 3 weeks for it.

Finals Fix: Manic Magpies expose Dees' massive flaw - but here's why they should have to win it all without Maynard

So Tim, a player taking a hanger, inadvertently kneeing someone in the back of the head causing concussion, should be suspended? Why don’t we just throw out all the rules and incorporate a hybrid basketball soccer type game now…. given the AFL’s track record they’ll have a crack at enforcing all that by the GF in a couple of weeks.

Finals Fix: Manic Magpies expose Dees' massive flaw - but here's why they should have to win it all without Maynard

Maynard should get off in my view but not holding my breath after seeing Sicily get rubbed out for 3 weeks for a legitimate tackle without any intent for malice. Hope Brayshaw is ok.

Finals Fix: Manic Magpies expose Dees' massive flaw - but here's why they should have to win it all without Maynard

Think you flatter the Pies a bit tonight Tim…….but nevertheless an excellent call re stats.
Good effort from Collingwood to just hang in and hold on and defend for dear life which is all you can do when under siege. But Dees the better side in the second half with the axis of evil in Gawn, Trac and Clarry dominating. Missed goals and even points they should have kicked. Their forwards, like Collingwood, have been an issue all year, but they will be better for the run particularly for McDonald and Fritsch and they’re still a chance to go all the way.
The huge wins for Pies tonight are a fighting scrapping win against a quality team, and an extra week off, including for Naicos who will give them a huge lift in class and skill all over the ground which they need despite looking the goods in the first quarter.

Thanks Chanon! 👍 🏉

Why every finals team can win the 2023 AFL premiership... and why they can't

Pies by 3 points…..in a hard slog
Carlton by 30 points…..Swans to play good footy for 3/4 in the wet but then overrun as they can be and also they know in their hearts they pinched the Crows spot.
Giants by 11 points…..in a full on physical riveting encounter
Port by 17 points…..if Lycette is fit

Pies over Port in GF classic

The Roar's AFL Finals Forecast: Week 1 expert tips, premier, Brownlow, biggest September surprise and more

What often gets overlooked is that even in his 2018 and 2019 A.A years Grundy was towelled up in the 2018 GF and the 2019 GF.
He’s not a natural ruckman and doesn’t have a natural ruckman’s instincts. At his best he was more of a huge athletic bullocking ruckrover type ruckman.
His issue is that unless he really rediscovers his mojo he’s not good enough to be a number one ruckman, and generally he’s struggles to find a spot for team balance as a second ruck. Ironically he had a good game with Gawn against the Pies in the KB round, and he could be handy in the wet on Thursday night.

TOM MORRIS: The hidden peril the Dees can't afford to risk in trading Brodie Grundy

The bye increases the chances for the bottom 4 by about 100 fold. But usually the top teams finish top for a reason. This finals series does feel more even and open but I’m going for Pies and Port to replicate their “game of the season” in the granny…..pending how fit Lycette is and how quickly Charlie gets back on the paddock.

Are Carlton poised to make a fairytale run through September?

Pies have gone for the 2 rucks. Cox picked as starting ruck. I think it’s the right call against an inform Gawn who along with Grundy convincingly won the big men battle last time these 2 teams met. Grundy could be a big out in the context of this game. Hope Cameron hits a bit of form.

AFL crucial cogs: The players who must make a difference in finals week one

Surprising and tough call. Pies might be going for a bit more bulk and strength against Dees midfield bulls and bigger bodies, particularly in the wet.

AFL crucial cogs: The players who must make a difference in finals week one

Reckon Sidey’s been pretty quiet since returning from injury PTS, expecting him to come good for the finals. Lipinski had a very good game against Geelong but not much since. He and Cameron could be vying for sub. I think we’ll handle it ok if it rains but so will the Dees, it’d be a tough slog.

Mini-grand finals, Saints' Toby tamer, should Pies play Cox? Five burning questions for AFL Finals Week One

Yes a few of the boys are getting a bit long in the tooth but they’re still offering plenty. I don’t see age as a big factor for Cox. McStay, Lipinski and Adams are a bit hot and cold but reasonable on their day. It’s hard to get the mix right, Pies have a few players around that B/C grade range but who can play well above themselves when the whole team is firing…… the whole is greater than the some of the parts should be the Pies’motto.
Frampton’s been surprisingly handy on numerous occasions this year but he’s not a key pillar up forward or back against quality opposition but is mobile around the ground – would be surprised he gets a guernsey barring injuries. Kruguer’s on standby. He’s a tough unit but they’ll stick with McStay for now.
I’m a big Johnson fan and think he’ll have a good career at the Pies. He needs another preseason in the gym atm and to work on his defensive pressure game. Ginnivan is better placed to give us a spark and a better balance for the forwards.
I like WHE being in the side, heaps of run, stamina, pressure and great link up player and can kick a goal. Does fumble sometimes unduly and is a confidence player.
You’re a harsh judge. What do you base that on?? Have some faith in Fly. Pies were everybody’s bottom 4 to wooden spoon tip last year and not many gave them a chance at finals this year.

Mini-grand finals, Saints' Toby tamer, should Pies play Cox? Five burning questions for AFL Finals Week One

Interesting mate. I think our fellas can handle the wet but as you suggest it will change our natural best game plan. If it is the case, and given that skill and accuracy will fall a bit, I hope they adopt more of the Richmond chaos brand of footy of just moving the ball forward at all costs and keep pressuring and running like the clappers. The rucks will be interesting.

NRL who can’t spell, you’ll watch it though hey!

That’s not funny that’s hilarious!

Why every finals team can win the 2023 AFL premiership... and why they can't

I think a definite chance Peter. Could all depend on the weather. Hopefully the 2 week break has freshened him up. Be interesting to see if Dees go for Grundy again. I think it could be to the Pies advantage if they don’t pick Grundy…..could be an ironic twist of fate coming up!

Why every finals team can win the 2023 AFL premiership... and why they can't

Agree to a point but a team only needs to be minus a couple of significant big key position players to start dropping off against the better teams.
If Lycette and Charlie are not fit I would give Port no chance of getting to the GF. If they and Marshall are good to go this weekend I think they’ll defeat the Lions.
They’ll need Lycette for Port to have the edge in the midfield otherwise Lions forwards will go to town.

Why every finals team can win the 2023 AFL premiership... and why they can't

I’m a bit concerned their rses may belong to the lizards now….

What's the best way to reward the AFL's minor premier? Give them the power to choose

That’s a genuine gripe Adam. The AFL still can’t manage professional umpiring so we can’t expect too much from them when scheduling the finals series.
Pies are going to beat Port in the granny anyway mate, so it won’t matter in the long run, tipping Port to knock over the Lions next weekend.

Why every finals team can win the 2023 AFL premiership... and why they can't

Nice summary PTS.
It’ll be a tough hard game. Dees won in nearly every position on the ground in the KB round and we still managed to nearly steal the game. That’s promising.
Last game Fritsch towelled up Moore which also nullified our attack out of defence. I think there’ll be a different match up this time round.
We also kept kicking it down May’s throat in our forward line. That just shouldn’t happen with Elliott, McStay and Ginnivan running around. And hopefully McStay can also make May more accountable.
Their big men set up the momentum for the win. Do we go for both Cox and Cameron, who were both beaten by Gawn and Grundy? Or just bank on Cox hitting a rich vein of form and placing faith in the pressure/running game? I agree re Cameron injury, he’s been pretty ordinary since mid season compared to the first half of the year.
Sidey and JDG usually play well against the Dees.

Why every finals team can win the 2023 AFL premiership... and why they can't

Excellent suggestion, and common sense when you think about it, locking in the Thursday, Friday etc well in advance

What's the best way to reward the AFL's minor premier? Give them the power to choose

Got c0mmie agenda written all over it Tim. The whole thing has obviously been orchestrated by the liz@rd @liens who by stealth and deception have become our overlords.
Mick was a great footballer and is a very astute observer of the game but he must have been having a bad week at the races with this one.
There’s clearly 2 divisions been created for the finals and as you say there is now more games, incentive and fun for the young ones. No one’s getting a free swing at becoming the outright premiers of the competition. And some poor kids are apparently going to get a fantastic life lesson in resilience by becoming division 2 wooden spooners.
Lots of sports and Aussie Rules comps have different divisions and premiers. It’s no biggie having the divisions arbitrated by the comp at the conclusion of the home and away season……based on merit!!
However the call for a Tuesday night final does seem to be an unwise and unfair call.

That local footy 'every team plays finals' drama is an absolute farce - but not for the reason everyone thinks

It’s a reasonable argument but don’t know how well that would translate into practical reality.
The current set up is way better than all the other dodgy incarnations since the final 5 – which was about as good as it gets.
The greater issue is having teams play each other only once in a 20 team comp and all teams travelling interstate every second week, etc, etc…..

What's the best way to reward the AFL's minor premier? Give them the power to choose

Hadn’t heard that Don. Would be devastating. Wish both fellas all the best.

AFL News: Docker demands trade, Curnow needs new role, Pies to keep Daicos in cotton wool, Lions tall retires

Sad but not surprising news for Adams. Hope he’s called it quits early enough and can get the right treatment and support to move forward and keep well in life.
Curnow is Carlton’s most valuable asset and they’d struggle in the finals without him. Could see Voss pinch hitting him with a run in the middle if Blues were struggling in a big game.
Lots of hope Naicos may get up for the qualifying final but Dad has spoken.
