My rugby union manifesto
Brilliant Gatsey!
As an adjunct to #7 and #13 and in order to achieve same, every team needs a player in the mould of Hoskins Sotutu, Gus Sowakula, Ardie Savea or Akira Ioane (with honorable mention to Valentini, Naisarani, Samu, Wilson).
My rugby union manifesto
Agreed, incomparable. I like Gamble a lot – pity he’s a Kiwi!!
REACTION: 'We're pretty disappointed'- Unlucky Tahs rue ill discipline as 'clinical' Chiefs take the chocolates
Paul, this issue was covered extensively in the match post and there no much agreement with your position. Red was the right call, e specially the leg lift.

Tahs season is over.
Max of two wins left, possibly the Highlanders And probably Moana.

Max, I think this piece raises a very interesting subject matter worth discussion not dismissal.
Which NRL players could make the switch for the 2027 Rugby World Cup?
Thanks Peter, good read and memories.
I would add my absolute favourite (Sir) Wayne Buck Shelford, one of the toughest, with an unbeaten test captaincy (albeit one draw). My favourite recollection is a picture of him after a match (maybe Auckland 1989) with a can of Tui and smoking a cigarette in the change rooms, bloodied and shirtless with his headband.
My 15 favourite All Blacks and why
My buddy became a citizen a decade ago. Filling in the various forms he was asked:
“Do you have a criminal conviction?”
His answer was “No. Is that still a requirement?”
'Crazy day': Quade Cooper officially an Australian citizen after passing test
what a great read and great memories. Thank you Peter.
And as I recall he was 6’3″ which gave impetus to the era of taller front rowers, but maybe I’m mistaken. Certainly the tallest hooker up to that point in time?
Sean 'Fitzy' Fitzpatrick: Baby Black to rugby icon
Agree, but Geoff only referenced the # of tries, a Narrow selection criteria.
Seven Wallabies, five All Blacks and three Boks in our Team of The Rugby Championship
…mmmm….Andrew Kellaway? Is this the Folau-selection-fallacy – the fact scored heaps hides more than it reveals? I’d put him fourth choice, maybe.

Springboks selections: Are we missing the bigger picture?
If the Kiwis are every critical, it is because they are nervous.
If the Ozzies are every critical, it is because they are envious.
Why I don't understand the Springboks hate
The average score across the whole team is greater than 50% (50.6%) – that tells me everything about the realism of the readers – or lack of it. The average without Hooper (top score) is 49% – that’s patently unrealistic as well, and without Lolesio (bottom score) its 51.4% – that’s at odds with what the expert commentators uniformly condemned as a pathetic show by the WBs.
Wallabies DIY player ratings from Bledisloe 3: The results
No doubt Erasmus has had a major impact, but don’t discount the incredible journey from abject township poverty and hardship for players like Mapimpi, Am and Kolisi to Springboks, which makes them so admirable as people and so highly respected and inspirational to their team mates, and respectful of the game itself.
Do you think this could also be a point of differentiation?
What the Wallabies can learn from the Springboks and All Blacks
Here’s an observation that won’t be popular amongst some: given my location and time zone I only watched the second half Mini on Stan: I did not see Hooper in any frame (apart from when Cody Taylor ran passed him to score), did not see him in a ruck, did not see see him make a tackle, take or make a pass, only saw him standing off the play, a passive witness to the front line, and as a long term critic of Hooper, this was him in perfect self-evidence of all of his failings as a forward and the lack of balance he brings to the forwards. As amazing as his individual stats have been over time, this test, this second half is witness to his abject failings as a member of a composite Walaby team.
MATCH REPORT: Rennie's Wallabies sent out to go big or die trying - it was the latter
“While we also acknowledge that this is a minor incident” – obviously not, for such drastic action.
UPDATED: Rennie on Wallabies' reaction as trio, including Marika Koroibete, stood down for drinking
Great read Irish, lively and full of anecdotes, varied and interesting – loved the game on Wednesday more than any for many years.
