Inglis is a QLD’er?

I’ll leave that for others to argue.

Next time i drive from Coolangatta to Brisbane I’ll have to stop in at Kempsey for a cuppa with Mal

NSW, time to embrace our Origin failure

You could even argue that who ever wins the first two games will most likely win the series.

Just saying…

State of Origin: NSW and Queensland stronger in 2012

When I watched Queensland win their 5th in a row on the winters night at ANZ Stadium in 2010 I consoled myself by remembering that I was privileged to watch one of the all time great Rugby League sides consisting of some of the greatest players of all time.

Similar to watching any Storm game. 🙂

Oh and it was Folou’s last game of Origin too. I wonder when his 4 year mission to the pagan lands will be over/

NSW, time to embrace our Origin failure

I coach junior footy here in Country NSW and as soon as my players reach Under 16’s level I tell them “You know you HAVE to play for NSW now – you can’t play for Queensland.”

NSW, time to embrace our Origin failure

Bit hard to stick with a player who has retired. Guess Queensland managed it with Alfie Langer however…

NSW, time to embrace our Origin failure

Dally Cherry-Evans is their half back. And yes I can’t stand them either. It is only begrudgingly that I’ve support the idea of the Stewart brothers making the NSW side. They epitomise everything I hate about Manly 🙂

BTW… GF’s in those years were:

2005 – Tigers v Cowboys
2006 – Bronco’s v Storm
2007 – Storm v Manly
2008 – Manly v Storm
2009 – Storm v Eels
2010 – Dragons vs Roosters
2011 – Manly v Warriors
2012 – Souths v Warriors (i wish!)

NSW, time to embrace our Origin failure

Yup but the battery runs out after six years.

NSW, time to embrace our Origin failure

That and Hunter Sports High School’s special position as a Queensland Embassy right in the middle of Newcastle 🙂

NSW, time to embrace our Origin failure

Ok let;s look a little more closely at that.

In 2005 the last year NSW won the Premiereship was won by the Tigers – who’s best player is a Kiwi
in 2006 – the first time the Maroons won Origin the Premiereship was won by the Broncos
In 2007 no one won (although i hear the Storm went very close)
In 2008 Manly won – I’ll concede at the time they were choc full of NSW potential players who for various reasons didn’t back it up for Origin
In 2009 there was no winner again (see 2007)
In 2010 the Dragons won – and the NSW side got stronger the following year as a result
in 2011 the Manly side won with a couple of NSW players, a couple of Kiwi’s and one very important Queenslander.

However I will concede your point that it is possible to win the Origin for NSW in the past 6 years – but for various reasons we didn’t.

Another way to look at it is to take note of the Kangaroos Squad. When the National Side has a 1,6,7 and 9 all from the Queensland side – not to mention Inglis, Hodges, Yow Yeh, Thaiday, Petro etc etc…

says a lot doesn’t it?

NSW, time to embrace our Origin failure

True but Macedonia as a power didn’t exist anymore.

Based on your analogy we can hopefully see the legacy of Queensland’s success being the spread of Rugby League culture to the pagan and uncivilised world (assuming that means SA and WA?).

Sound great! I look forward to that playing out.

NSW, time to embrace our Origin failure

Exactly. Or should we tell them not to come because someone watching might feel ‘uncomfortable’?

The champ is here! But are we ashamed of Muhammad Ali?

Ahh yes but if any of these QLD Cup players are any good then we’ll research until we find a season where they played 3 games as an under 16 for Tweed Heads and get Ricky to give them a call 🙂

NSW, time to embrace our Origin failure

The World Cup has nothing to do with being World Champions – I’m simply talking about their win rate in international matches.

Of course feel free to disagree – and claim the Kiwi’s as the best Rugby League team in the world (until the next World Cup) 🙂

By your argument surely NSW achieved under dog status when Andrew Johns retired? Or when Kurt Gidley was named Captain?

NSW, time to embrace our Origin failure

I think what Ricky Stuart is trying to breed out of the NSW culture is the complacency about Origin. First we had complacency about our ability to win all the time. Recently it has been complacency that we will always lose. Either way it’s a wasted emotion. Ricky is the on the right track I believe… hope he stays in the job a few more seasons.

NSW, time to embrace our Origin failure

“Lets get something straight, right now, Queensland will forever in a day be the underdogs, we could win 15 Origins straingth, and still be the underdogs, we earnt the right. We got flogged for 70 years, 70 years as the underdogs we copped a beating from NSW, and after a poultry 6 years you think you have earned the right now to have the underdog status.”

Interesting statement. Especially because you’re talking of an era when a NSW team full of Queensland players was beating Queensland every year. Now that that particular situation has been rectified (except of course for the one NSW player who consistently makes the Queensland side 🙂 ) you can hardly claim under dog status. Indeed your statement reads like a revisionist history lesson – something like the French saying ‘the Italians occupied us for 500 years back in the Roman era therefore they deserve to get smashed by us…’

One word for them and one word for you Oikee – Ancient History mate!

Still if you really want to hold onto your under dog status then you could do worse than embrace the philosophy of the All Blacks in New Zealand – managing to be world champions for 100 years straight and STILL maintain and under dog status. Takes a special talent….

NSW, time to embrace our Origin failure

Carlos I like your side. Stewart I agree with and it;s nice to see someone who finally has faith in Jamie Soward. As for hooker – your choice of Farah is interesting. What i would certainly argue is that despite Buderus’s current form he is not the right fit for NSW. We need to continue to build a team for the future. Buderus’s future in the NRL is limited to say the least. Farah, Ennis or even Gidley would be a good choice at number #9.

Buderus, Carney make my NSW State of Origin team

Both. It looked to me like Ali was taking the game ball out to the pitcher but i might be wrong. It appeared that the owner of the team had organized the appearance.

The champ is here! But are we ashamed of Muhammad Ali?

Great article. Love to hear someones POV on Rugby League from outside Australia. It is a great game and it doesn’t hurt that we are in the middle of an absolute Golden Age – athletes like Billy Slater, Benji Marshall and Darren Lockyer are some of the worlds greatest sporting heroes regardless of what code of sport you follow.

Why an Irishman deems NRL the world's best comp to follow

One question – why is Michael Ennis being disregarded by everyone? I look at Buderus and he reminds me of Minichelo last year – nice idea and might be able to bring some experience to the team but if I was a Queensland player I know who I would worry about at Number 9 – and it’s not Buderus.

Buderus, Carney make my NSW State of Origin team

From what I had heard Ali’s mind is as sharp as ever. I seriously don’t think he could be talked into anything unless he wanted to do it. Whether or not he should still be making these appearances in terms of his health is up to him and his family. What i take offence to is the suggestion that he shouldn’t be appearing because the audience would feel uncomfortable. Whether we should feel uncomfortable about watching Ali and other boxers getting their brains smashed again and again is our problem – not his.

The champ is here! But are we ashamed of Muhammad Ali?

You probably won’t read this because the article is too old.

My 50,000 at ANZ and it felt awful referred to Origin. I went to Origin 3 a couple of years back and despite everything – the 20,000 empty seats really impacted on the atmosphere. It felt like you were watching the game on TV at a particularly boring pub. Of course it didn’t help that NSW was losing… again. 🙂

Killing off suburban NRL grounds a shocking idea

If TV ratings in NZ help to bring in advertising dollars and therefore push up the value of the NRL TV rights then they are relevant and should be included. It is merely about dollars.

The fun and games about statistics here are irrelevant – they have nothing to do with the purpose of the ratings. The ratings are to determine the value of the product in order to make more advertising money next year. Period. End of story. If high TV ratings for your particular code happen to make you feel good inside then I’m happy for you… but that’s nothing to do with what they are for (and why they were presented on the TV Tonight website)

It's just not right to include New Zealand

Makes you wonder doesn’t it – what is the rest of the country doing or not doing when these high rating TV shows are on?

The AFL and NRL grand final ratings game

There have been lots of interesting points made about AFL vs NRL tv ratings here – however to the average fan who really cares? TV ratings exist soley to give advertisers a sense of the audience demographic they are reaching and therefore how much the TV networks will charge them to place their ads during the game. Other than that TV ratings are irrelevant.

The idea of including pubs and clubs in the ratings is absurd – because absolutely no one watching sport in a pub, club or backyard BBQ is going to be watching the ads. Therefore that audience is entirely irrelevant to our TV masters. Likewise people watching online feeds or recording and watching later are pretty much irrelevant too – because they’re not watching the ads either.

As for the pissing contest that goes on here in regards to which code is better based on TV ratings – I’m sorry but I wouldn’t be using TV ratings as a barometer of taste. I know that Two and a Half Men rates very well for Nine – doesn’t mean there’s anything quality about that show. Likewise some pretty shit movies (ie: Transformers 2) have scored high box office – still doesn’t make them good.

Like i said at the start – TV ratings mean only ONE thing. Advetising dollars. The rest of the argument is merely an attempt to claim superiority based on statistics. And i’m pretty sure no one on these forums (or in real life) is going to say ‘oh well I’ll give up the sport I love to watch and watch the more popular one…’

So what’s the point?

The AFL and NRL grand final ratings game

One question – if a team is stripped of all it’s points like Melbourne last year or the Bulldogs in 2002 – does that mean they are automatically relegated the following year?

If so I can see a team like Melbourne being an absolute monster in the 2nd dvision.

Secondly – which games are televised? Television ratings for League are not necessarily dependent on the teams performance remember. Melbourne can’t get a big TV audience to save itself regardless of on field performance where as a team like South Sydney gets high ratings regardless of the teams performance.

The spread of TV coverage would be the big issue here – because that’s what draws the sponsors to the teams.

And how about some teams based in regional NSW? BTW Illawarra and Newcastle are not really regional NSW – they’re still large metro areas. Oh and regional QLD too?

The NRL should be creative with expansion
