I just find it odd that the version of rugby that is much bigger internationally and seems to generate more national pride when we win is the 2nd class version here.
As an AFL supporter, Rugby Union caught my eye probably due to more kicking and marking than League.
It find it embarrassing that we keep losing to NZ when we’ve got players here that could beat them if only they played union.

As someone from South Australia, I’m passionate about AFL but also have always enjoyed watching watching rugby union.
Can someone explain to me why the Wallabies are always fairly ordinary but the Rugby League national team is always so dominate?
Is it because:
1. Australia’s best players play league?
or
2. Theres no competition in league so it makes us look dominate
or
3. Combination of both?
Would the wallabies be better if the league stars switched to union?

I doubt they’d behave any different if they were playing today. They’d be cashing in on the 12mths of the year T20 tournaments as well.
Cricket’s problem is there’s just way too much cricket these days. It’s 12 months of the year now.

Off topic but you make a really good point Don…how can a contract be for 1 year, 2 years, 3 years or 4 years when the contractor can be terminated at any time and the payout is only 6 months?
Such conditions mean it’s actually a 6 month rolling contract.

They’re just giving the majority of the footy public want they want….sensationalism. They wouldn’t be so successful if they didn’t have a large target audience that tunes into their content. They’re filling demand.
The majority of the footy public seem to prefer entertainment instead of technical analysis or cliches from media trained players/officials.

Great article. Anyone that argues to keep Ken after 10 years…2 list rebuilds…umpteen assistant coaches….numerous free agents and a fully funded football department…is quiet frankly, delusional.
Every other club board in the history of the VFL/AFL football would’ve moved Ken on before now (why? Because Ken is the record holder for a coach at one club without a GF appearance) and they would’ve been proven correct because Ken hasn’t made a GF. His record against top 8 teams is atrocious and is why Port has the reputation for being ‘flat track bullies’ beating up on bottom 10 teams.

The AFL should cut the crap and admit that the real reason their isn’t a Tasmanian team already is because there’s too many teams from the old VFL days in Melbourne therefore expansion to 19 teams isn’t viable because it won’t bring an extra game on TV.
If the AFL was starting from scratch today there’s no way they’d be 10 teams in Melbourne.

Talk about glass jawed. The AFL media spend most of their time whacking the players and industry in general yet anyone offer them the slightest criticism and they go banannas.

I agree though that the team looks like it needs a new coach to freshen the playing group up.
Maybe Ken can turn it around but I doubt it. We’ll see.
It’s not often that a long term coach under massive pressure turns it around though. Hardwick did but I can’t think of any others.

A great coach needs great assistant coaches.
What’s happening at Port now also happened after we made the 2014 prelim when we lost Alan Richardson and Phil Walsh soon after.
During the 2021 finals series, Carlton and Westcoast moved in and poached Michael Voss and Jared Schofield from us. Moving in on our coaches during a finals campaign is pretty rotten if you ask me but AFL is dog eat dog.
Same as what happened in 2015, there’s now a severe dip in form and game plan. Just can’t afford to lose assistant coaches of that calibre.

Only have to pay him out 6 months. AFL changed rules to stop stupid boards paying out multiple year contracts to sacked coaches.

Port fans shouldn’t underestimate the calibre of assistant coaches they lost at the end of 2021… Michael Voss and Jarod Schofield.
One of those 2 should’ve been the senior coach at Port now.

I listen to Kane on the radio most days. Obviously don’t agree with everything he days but at least he speaks his mind and is entertaining.
However one thing that does annoy me with Kane is he often complains that athletes are too vanilla to the media these days…so media trained that they give nothing and are boring to interview but yet everytime an athlete does display flair, confidence, extrovertism and cockiness, he ALWAYS smashes them!

The Suns will surely come good sooner rather than later. They have too much first round talent on their list not to start winning more games.
Don’t read too much into Port’s slow start to the season. Strong teams don’t prioritise winning early season trial games. They correctly prioritise such games for what they’re intended for…..trialling players in different positions, trialling modifications to game plans and as a controlled build up to round 1.
Clubs with recent poor records need early wins no matter what in order to sell optimism to a disenchanted supporter base.

Everybody at CA….management…coaches and players just wanted Langer to resign with dignity. He’d been told his time was up and better for everyone involved, especially Langer himself that he walk away quietly with his head held high rather than have it play out dirty in public, which unfortunately is what happened.

It’s good to get some balance. Every other media organisation is overwhelmingly pro Langer biased.
At the end of the day, Langer must’ve upset a heck of a lot of people in the team to have provoked such backlash against him.

The clubs got it right with how they went about making their Australia day statements. The clubs themselves made the statements without forcing the players to publicly back those statements.
Players just want to play sport without being forced to air their personal opinions on various social issues.

Is the NRL mainly public school based? If it is then therein lies the problem with rugby union because the majority of the biggest fastest most talented rugby players in Australia play NRL.
If those players played Union then maybe we could beat the All Blacks.
