I believe the Gold Coast Suns will more likely have some success when their women’s team enters the AFLW competition next year.

2019 AFL season preview: Gold Coast Suns

The China matches did have a big TV audience so I wouldn’t knock those two matches. Gil does deserve credit for this.

The unwanted return of AFLX

Here is my conspiracy theory: I suspect that land developers and local councils are in cahoots to provide less land for ovals.
Australian football ovals require more land than does a rectangular soccer field. Larger ovals mean that local councils would have fewer rates with the more land needed for such ovals. And for the land developer, it means more lots for sale and hence more profit.
So really, since that AFLX is going to help make more money for both, surely this competition could be sponsored by either a national land developer or some local council association.

AFLX is a misguided waste of resources

Aussie Rules football got about a three-second promo on Global Business tonight, channel 653. It was part of a story on how China started hosting major international sporting events about ten years ago. I thought I’d mention this since it relates to this article about globalisation.

Has globalisation helped or hampered Australian football?

The thought the Western Bulldogs grand final win was the highlight of 2018 for me.

The best women's sports moments of 2018

It is rather confusing these days when for example a mate would say to me, “let’s go down to the park to have a kick of the football” and I don’t know which shaped ball to take with me.

Has globalisation helped or hampered Australian football?

Hi Cat, I did attemp to address the imbalance issue of too many Melbourne teams some years ago. Please read my Roar article, the one and only article I ever contributed to this website.

Has globalisation helped or hampered Australian football?

If the Tasmanian government was desperate for their own team they would need to construct a high-speed train between Launceston and Hobart. This would enable club members to attend matches in both cities.

AFL expansion - time to make it fully national

Certainly there seems to be a loophole that needs to be urgently outlawed before this Saturday’s match between GWS and Collingwood.

AFL Commission to consider four recommendations put forward by competition committee

The problem is that it’s too easy for the AFL to change the rules of the game. When the federal government wants to makes changes to the constitution they have to get the other states on board and then have a referendum; but somehow, Australian Rules footy isn’t thought to be as important enough to seek endorsement from the second tier state leagues.

There's no need to change the AFL's beautiful game

It’s seems like all but two teams are extraordinary close to each other in terms of their ability to win matches. I don’t know the statistics but I wouldn’t be surprised if this year has seen fewer blowout margins than in any other year on record, and that’s even accounting for Richmond’s demolitions.

I’m tipping Richmond for the flag.

Will Richmond's challenger please stand up?

Sorry about the spelling error, I meant to type Brayshaw.

If the Gaff incident doesn’t change the AFL’s attitude, nothing will

A little off topic, but curious to know why was Bradshaw shepherding with two hands into Gaff’s shoulder when the football was like more than 100 metres away? The rule in the AFL is that you can only shepherd within five metres of the football, and so obviously Bradshaw was attempting to prevent Gaff from following the football.

If only the umpires would enforce the five-metre shepherding rule would then players be able to move freely around the ground without being harassed by the tag.

If the Gaff incident doesn’t change the AFL’s attitude, nothing will

This is a classic example of: ‘be careful of what you wish for’.
People who wanted more teams are probably having reservations about what it now means, similar to UK citizens who have regreted voting for Britex.
Was it really necessary to break a highly successful eight team model?

Daisy Pearce hits out at AFL over treatment of women's competition

To placate Tim Worner how about the AFL allow a 15-second timed commercial break after a behind is kicked? This would surely add value to the next TV broadcast deal.
I recall years ago the rule used to be that after a behind was kicked a player needed to wait until after the goal umpire had waved the flags to signify the point scored. Some years ago, perhaps a decade or more, the AFL changed the kick-in rule after a behind was scored to speed the game up; which is ironic, considering that these days the game is too fast.

Panic! at the AFL

Perhaps the World Cup in Russia might be partly the reason.
Here in Perth I know there is a large component of the population born overseas and many of those think it’s a game without rules. The AFL needs to do more to introduce this indigenous game to new citizens. I think there already is one round dedicated to multiculturalism; this is fine, but is not necessarily targeting new migrants. I would like the AFL to give all new citizens a free ticket to any match of their choice.

State of the game? It's the state of the football media that's the problem

How about the TV broadcasters have two in-game commentary teams with each having a bias against different opposing teams. So, for example, Freo fans would watch 7mate for their pro-Fremantle bias; and then for Port Adelaide fans, they could watch the same broadcast on another of Seven’s digital channels, say 70 or 72 for their pro-Power bias commentary.
This would be an interesting experiment to see if the TV ratings combined pan out to be higher than what a single commentary team would have got. I expect this would certainly alleviate complaints about what the TV commentators say during the broadcast, especially when they are saying what the viewers want to hear.

After last weekend Gold Coast may need to reevaluate who are their best 22, perhaps it’s now fewer than the seven you say.

Ten hot takes from AFL Round 18

A 17-5 fixture would be impractical for each club’s supporters to organise flights and accommodation to a venue for which we wouldn’t know the location until after round 17 (or round 18 if there is a bye). Perhaps you would have enough time to book a package holiday for the last three rounds, but nevertheless, it still would be rushed with having to get a few days off work at short notice.
And what happens if a venue is already booked out months in advance.

Ten hot takes from AFL Round 18

Pagan makes a good case for Carlton to receive a priority pick and so I tend to agree with him. It’s unfortunate when a whole club is penalised for something which was probably done by only a few individuals.

AFL must give Blues priority pick: Denis Pagan

I sense of community feeling being lost might be because society in general is more fragmented these days. In the 1960s everyone use to talk about football at the office tearoom or at the pub. Now these days you’ve got four football codes, American sports and ice hockey. So there’s all these silos where communities are split, I guess it’s similar to religion with all the different denominations.

Another long, uninteresting winter awaits the AFL: It’s time for change

1) I disagree and actually believe there should be two 3-week bye rounds each year. Roughly spaced at a third and two-thirds during the season. You still have six matches to choose from and I still find blowouts watchable because I look out to see which players have the mental discipline to play with maximum effort even though they’re up against it.

3) The length of the season is fine, but ideally it would be better to have twelve teams with each team playing each other twice, one at home and one away. That equals 22 home and away rounds plus two byes.

Larry, if players on the receiving end had a chance to watch the repay then they may well give a cold-shoulder to any forgiveness from the perpetrator. Many times victims of concussion just don’t remember the incident.

Cameron elbow overshadows Giants AFL win

The Gold Coast Suns should have a bias towards recruiting Queenslanders even if they are perceived to be less talented. Actually let all 18 clubs likewise. Having passion for your state can overcome any slight deficiency in talent.

Tom Lynch must be allowed to make his own choice

I agree there is a cold war happening, which is because corporate or sponsorship dollars are limited. A pie can only be sliced so many ways, this in turn flows through to the salaries of all professional players who receive a lessor salary than would be the case if Australia had just two football codes.
On any one weekend you’re normally going to attend just the one match, and so the rival codes miss out.
