I'm an all around sports enthusiast. My most memorable sporting moment was seeing the Socceroos qualify for the World Cup and then watching them play in Germany.

It’s not crunch time. This is Ange’s first game in charge. It will take him time and he should be given time to experiment with some fringe players to pick the players that suit his playing style. Winning is important but it’s not everything in these friendly matches. Winning at all costs is what started Holger Osieck’s demise as he was too worried about losing friendlies to give young fringe players a chance and it stagnated the national team.
I for one can’t wait to see how the team play tonight.
Australia vs Costa Rica: It's crunch time for Socceroos
I’m from Sydney and I would go and watch a grand final in Sydney regardless of who was playing but I like the current system of the best qualified team hosting the game. Why shouldn’t the best performed team get to host the GF in their own backyard? The options for WSW, SFC, MVC, MH and BRI are obvious. CCM and NEW would have to play at Allianz Stadium. It is a bit unfair that their home ground advantage would be taken away if they were playing a Sydney team but unfortunately that’s the only option. The cake tin holds plenty for a GF, the issue there would be filling the stadium. Perth and Adelaide may argue that they could move the GF to their respective cricket/AFL grounds, not the best way to watch a football game I know but it’s an option.
We should celebrate that football is a national sport. Unlike the NRL and AFL you can’t really say that football belongs to one particular area in Australia.
Don't give the A-League grand final to Sydney
Sydney FC are stuck in their ‘build and it and they will come’ mentality with respect to their fans. As has been said before Del Piero is a massive drawcard but will the fans be back next season once he’s gone. Unlikely. Particuarly if they have another poor season which is where they’re currently headed.
They only need to look across town for a model of how to engage their fans and get fans to the game who are passionate about the club and the shirt and not just obsessed with one player.
I agree with earlier comments about the quality of the rest of the team. The league is too good now to be carrying players or playing them out of position. If you want to play 2 number 10’s play a different system, don’t let one be a liability at number 6. Is this their long term plan? Matt Thompson is the best holding midfielder they’ve got and he’s only there as an injury replacement.
The players that have come through the NYL set up have failed to impress at senior level and unless the youth setup is changed this will continue to happen. Players know if they go to other A-League clubs they’re more likely to get a run in the first team too.
I feel it’s going to be a long season for Sydney FC and I fear that their answer next season will be to bring in another massive name and see if they can all jump on his back on their way to the A-League title and hopefully the fans will tag along for the ride.
Del Piero should be the icing, not the cake, for Sydney FC
I once saw Mundine up on the Gold Coast with his entourage and as one of my mates was a huge fan I asked for an autograph.
One of the nicest guys you could ever meet, very obliging and friendly. But stick a camera in the guys face and he turms into a babbling trash talking mess. It’s a shame that the public didn’t get to see the other side of the man.
Well past it now, he should retire now with whatever dignity he has left.
Mosley vs Mundine axed as boxing takes uppercut
Great preview Mike.
I think Brisbane can be genuine title contenders this season. I like how they’ve strengthened and their preseason results have been impressive. They probably are darkhorses compared to MV, CCM and WSW but I think they’ll make the GF alongside MV.
Liam Miller is a massive coup for them and McKay will provide great energy.
2013/14 A-League season preview: Brisbane Roar
You have to say that the Wanderers have lost nothing and picked up some handy players that are going to compliment their squad.
As Chris said, Santalab wasn’t a regular goal scorer at Sydney FC so it’ll be interesting to see how far he’s come. Tom Juric showed glimpses of his ability last year and you’d think he’d have plenty of opportunities to ripple the net if last years service from Hersi, Bridge, Ono and Mooy is anything to go by. They’ve strengthened their defence too which will allow Poppa to rotate his squad a bit more particularly through the busy Christmas period. I remember last season when he took a second string team to Perth and they got a result. He will be able to do this again this season and with a bit more quality. This season he will have Spiranovic and Dean Heffernan banging down the door attempting to crack into last seasons solid back four of Polenz, Topor-Stanley, Beachump and D’Appuzo. The Wanderers on paper should have a good season. It will be interesting to see how the other teams approach them tactically. Will second season syndrome hit last season’s minor premiers?
2013/14 A-League season preview: Western Sydney Wanderers
Gazza definitely deserved the Brownlow he had a cracking season and he is helping the young Suns develop quickly into professional footballers.
Probably something that GWS wish they had. Jack Scully will be a fantastic player but they could’ve done with an already established star of the league.
Joel Selwood was very unlucky to miss out. He’s become a complete player now for the Cats.

Got to agree with you JAJI. What Holger saw in Cornlakes I’ll never know. Scores a couple of tap ins and all of a sudden he’s a regular in the Socceroos squad. Glad to see him gone. Great to see a bit of youth in the squad. Hopefully he gives them all sufficient game time across the two games.
There’s no way any of the older players will be announcing their retirement 9 months out from a World Cup. Players won’t be giving up there spot for anyone.
Well done Holger for picking an appropriate squad for international friendlies.
Schwarzer not in Socceroos squad to face France, Canada
Great read and I agree with you about Zdrilic but maybe he will surprise. I would’ve thought that Ned Zelic or Jason Culina would’ve brought a bit more cheekiness to the show but I won’t judge Zdrilic until I’ve seen him.
What a great way for SBS to return to coverage of domestic football. A great football entertainment show followed by free to air coverage of the A-League can only be good for the game.
I hope the show is done well with match reviews and previews, interviews, guest hosts (there are plenty of characters in the A-League, why not get them on to provide a bit of humour and insight into what it’s like to be an A-League footballer). Plenty of comic relief without going over the top, they could do a lot worse than following the example of Soccer AM. I like the idea of Dive of the week, plenty of funny stuff happens during a weekend of A-League football so I’m sure there’ll be plenty to work with.
I can’t wait to see what the show is like, what the ratings are like and how the A-League followers embrace the show and how many non-followers will jump on the A-League bandwagon
