If you want something you've never had, then you'd better be prepared to do something you've never done.

Keanu baccus is another brilliant young player..started a few games at right back last season but is wasted there. Excellent passing range and a tempo doctating type player, Modric style

How about Josh nesbitt at central coast? Small in stature (in fact he looked tony next to bolt) but absolutely fantastic technique. Marco rojas-esque with better bision and composure

I hear you RF. But to be fair head given debuts and game time to the likes of Rahmat Akbari and Daniel Leck, not to mention Joe caletti. Connor O toole’s coming through as well. It’s not fair to say that he didn’t give youth a chance. Among the 4 players mentioned above I’d say only o toole looks a first xi player. My take is that the jury’s still out on caletti and Akbari, while leck isn’t quite ready for first team football, beyond the occasional cup game.

Why the Brisbane Roar's 'Dad's Army' is a problem

He hasn’t really had a chance to play DM at Melbourne. Carl Valeri took up a spot and the young prospect in midfield was Rashid Mahazi a couple of seasons back and Josh Hope for the last season. So he hasn’t really had a chance to show what he can do in DM. Has the technique for it though:)

Hey Mid

Thanks for the encouragement:). I was just thinking a few seasons back that it was no coincidence that the team’s from smaller catchment areas or The Jets and Mariners did so poorly compared to Melbourne or Sydney based clubs. The salary cap and squad restrictions were meant to even out the balance but the disparity still exists, which makes the Jets success of last season all the more inspiring. Anyway thanks for commenting and hope to see ya around:))

Finally I didn’t say I’ve a problem with their age…I said that the positions they were playing in is wrong. I’d love to see McKay/Kris in the team, but as Centre backs rather than defensive mids

3) your point that mclaren et al is irrelevant. McLaren borrello and petratos were a better combi than the one mentioned above. Even if they weren’t, which is personal opinion, that doesn’t mean age is not the problem. It’s a strawman argument

2) You mentioned that TK and McKay could be swapped out for Nigro and Caletti. I don’t agree with that. I agree that Nigro is best in the DM role but he’s predominantly played at RB for Victory. Thus he lacks experience playing the DM role. This coupled with his relatively young age makes him a backup option at most for the DM role.

Also Caletti is on the fringes, a prospect player a la Daniel Leck/Rahmat Akbari. No way Aloisi starts him as a first XI regular.

Agree with your point aboit Mauk. Though it’s useless wondering what could be if he doesn’t play there. Mauk played as a CM in a 433 the last game. Id like to see mauk in a DM role in a 4231

Cheers:)

Why the Brisbane Roar's 'Dad's Army' is a problem

Hey Waz, thanks for commenting. I’m just starting out as a writer and I’m aware that I’ve plenty to learn:)

That said, I don’t agree with some of the points you raised

1) I see where you’re coming from regarding average contract length. But my take is that some nuance is lost here.
The average contract length of 2 plus years includes lesser lights and younger players. I think you’ll find that the starting XI tend to be on longer contracts. It’s the reserves who tend to be on shorter ones. Also Premier League clubs tend to have multiple extension clauses for important players, that can be triggered by either games played or at the club’s discretion. These are a ‘invisible’ extra years not taken into account. In Brisbane’s case, Taggart is their main ST and a first XI player. A 2 year contract for this type of player is pretty short

This ^^:). Would honestly love to see McKay and Kristen seen converted to centre backs, a la Milligan/Jedi:)

Why the Brisbane Roar's 'Dad's Army' is a problem

Also 2 years is long in the a league context (regarding your point about Taggart) but is pretty short in other leagues. A 2 year contract basically means that a player will never be sold for full market value if a transfer offer comes in, since there’s only around 1 year left on the contract by that time. That’s why Mierzejewski over at Sydney was sold for 1.3 million when his MV was 2.5 million at that time

My mistake regarding Mauk. Thanks for pointing it out:)

Regarding the point about attackers I was thinking in terms of the entire transition from winning the ball back to attacking, which tends to include the entire spine of the team from Defensive Midfield to Strikers., Especially in the 4231 formations that are in vogue among a league teams. But writing “players involved in attacking transition” is just heavy:( thanks for the clarification though:)
