England 37-21 Wallabies: Eddie Jones has last laugh over Michael Cheika

I agree Phipps had a shocking game, particularly when contrasted with Youngs, but I think you are totally wrong, Spiro, in your assessment of the Vunipola non-penalty. You say, “The reason Jaco Peyper did not award a penalty against Vunipola, which would have been justified, is that he, along with most of the other leading referees, is hostile to halfbacks (particularly) trying to milk a penalty in this type of situation.”

So you’re telling us that an international referee will deliberately ignore the laws of the game because his ego won’t allow the affected player to point out the infringement to him? If this is the way, as you suggest, that senior referees are controlling games, no wonder they are vilified by the rugby public for their subjective and inconsistent decisions.

This is even worse if your assertion that Peyper punished the Wallabies for not turning up at a meeting organized by the grandstanding Eddie Jones is correct.

Peyper had an ordinary game but was not the reason the Wallabies lost. They lost because they have yet to develop the mental strength to overcome a poor call or bounce of the ball and get back on track. They also lack variety when confronted with a well organized defensive line.

You seriously think Hansen was trying to help Cheika out? You’ve got be kidding. He was just putting in the boot in his usual smug, patronising way.

Old heads and young guns in Wallabies squad to face French Barbarians

Ah, Frank Frank, you have perfectly summed up my whole Roar experience to date. I don’t know what was more clever – the article or your responses to the brain-dead dross who just didn’t get it. Some people need to get their heads out of their a*ses now and then to smell the fresh air and see the world.

Why Michael Cheika is the worst thing that happened ever

Could it be that the certain half back was sent back home as part of living up to your name, Wombat? You know, “Wombat – eats roots & leaves.”

Spare us the politically correct motherhood statements, will you, Worldgame? How can there not be racial undertones when the whole selection policy is based on racial quotas?

Roar Forum: What changes should the Wallabies make for Ireland?

Phil, the petty so-called Wallaby fans are so engrossed in their parochial views of players and coaches they forget the bigger picture of the Wallabies.

It’s like the famous old saying, “When you’re up to your armpits in crocodiles it’s hard to remember you’re there to drain the swamp.”

The Wrap: Highlights aplenty but festering lowlight needs urgent fix

Totally agree, Blue. Spiro is yet again pushing the line from his old mates, Dwyer & co, who believe the whole rugby world revolves around Sydney. I’m surprised he didn’t suggest that Super Rugby should be axed & replaced with an internationally extended Shute Shield.

I’m a proud Sydneysider but deeply oppose the self serving, patronising nepotism from those who try to dominate the rugby agenda from Sydney.

The Force and Rebels are making great progress and should be encouraged to further develop their junior pathways, instead of constantly fighting off parochial vested interests.

Boks loss to Italy should force a Super Rugby format re-think

It’s time Australia & New Zealand gave South Africa the flick and created an Australasian comp that includes the existing Aus & NZ franchises, Japan & a Pacific island franchise. A 12 team comp, played in reasonably close time zones would mean we could have a proper home and away comp without all the conference nonsense. There would be no arguments about who deserved to be in the finals because everyone plays everyone twice.

South Africa should focus on their own politics and develop their own comp. Similarly Argentina should work with Northern America to create an American comp.

SANZAR can exist purely to run the international Rugby Championship.

Cliff, do you get any joy from Rugby or supporting the Wallabies? It sounds like it is all misery for you.

Five talking points from the Scotland vs Wallabies Spring Tour Test

Did you get around to watching the game yet, Boz, or still really can’t be bothered spending another 80 minutes of your life watching the same silly mistakes?

Five talking points from the Scotland vs Wallabies Spring Tour Test

Fair enough, PeterK.

The only way Cooper can develop his skills under pressure is to have some decent time on the field. It’s a tricky one, isn’t it, though? If you’re not confident in him under pressure, you’d be reluctant to risk him in the cauldron. However, only playing him in situations where he is not under pressure doesn’t help him to develop the confidence and mental toughness to step up, which he would have to do if Foley was injured, for example. Somehow, Cheika has to find the right balance because we need more depth at 5/8.

Roar Forum: What changes should the Wallabies make for France?

These 50/50 passes are an interesting topic. The All Blacks have become dominant with their offloading ability, whilst the Wallabies have been roundly criticised for not doing it. I think they’re a lot more mindful of it with Mick Byrne as skills coach and they’re trying to do it more often. It will take time for the skills and judgement to improve to the extent that more of these passes will stick. If they can leave the 50/50 passes behind and go for 70/30 for a while it may work better.

Highlights: Wallabies produce great escape in Scotland

And there it is, Fionn. You don’t rate Foley and I do. Viva la difference! Wouldn’t life be dull if everyone had the same opinion?

Roar Forum: What changes should the Wallabies make for France?

OK, Ruckin’ Oaf, the “Crab” jibe was a bit rude. I was referring to his habit of running sideways with the ball.

I think Cooper is an excellent player when he has space and does some exciting things with the ball. I just don’t trust him to perform under pressure. Foley cops a lot of flak from a determined bunch of Roarers. I don’t believe he deserves much of it. On form, he is our best 5/8.

Roar Forum: What changes should the Wallabies make for France?

Nicely cherry-picked response. You clearly have an unshakable view and, in fairness, I guess I do, too. I think Foley gets bagged more than he deserves. Let’s agree to differ.

Roar Forum: What changes should the Wallabies make for France?

Foley does try it. He did against Wales very effectively early in the game. Scotland were better organised and stood their wingers deeper in defence to cut off the option. No point in kicking the ball straight to the defenders.

QC only employs this kicking game by standing deep, which is useless for backline play.

Roar Forum: What changes should the Wallabies make for France?

The thing with his clearance kicking is baffling, I admit, but I don’t think it’s ability as much as game plan. The Wallabies never seem to want to kick it into touch when clearing. I don’t understand why this is so. It’s not just Foley doing it. Maybe the WB’s don’t wan’t a lineout where it’s not their throw. I think they’d be better off defending from the lineout rather than defending against broken counter attacking play. The All Blacks almost always make them pay for this strategy.

I think you’re a bit harsh with your comments about Foley but let’s agree to disagree.

Roar Forum: What changes should the Wallabies make for France?

Every 5/8 struggles behind a pack that does not give him front foot ball, particularly when the clearance from 1/2 back is slow and rush defence is employed. Foley backed himself to stay flat and attempt to get his supports across the advantage line. Under pressure, Cooper runs sideways and looks for the low percentage flick pass or stands deep and makes it hard to reach the advantage line. His so-called better kicking game is a myth except when he is returning kicks when he has dropped back in defence.

Roar Forum: What changes should the Wallabies make for France?

Oh Fionn, you’re at it again with the Foley bashing. As I said to Redsback in another post:

You are far too biased in your assessment of Foley and your complete infatuation with Crab Cooper. You have totally disregarded Foley’s great hands under continual severe pressure from rush defence while receiving very slow ball from Genia. It was these beautiful hands that put Keridrani away for the winning try.

Roar Forum: What changes should the Wallabies make for France?

Although Foleau played well at fullback, I’d still like to see him swap with DHP. Foleau with a roving commission would be probably even more dangerous. The runaround move with Foley that led to Hodge’s try would work just as well from the wing. DHP is great under the high ball and runs the ball back straight and hard, which gives his support players time to get into position. Speight is not up to it at international level. He’s had plenty of opportunities but never delivered. I’d go for Naivalu or Morahan if he can be picked.

Genia was slow with his service vs Scotland, which put Foley under severe pressure. Despite the pressure he was under, Foley continued to stay flat and his hands were mostly excellent. The speed through his hands to Kuridrani under extreme pressure is what created the winning try. I’d start with Phipps and bring Genia on after 50, which is about when Phipps usually goes off the boil.

I think Hooper and Pocock together works OK. Our problem is still with a hard hitting lock to replace Coleman if he’s out. Mumm played Ok but, like Simmons, doesn’t bend the line and his defence does not drive the opposition back. I’d be inclined to start with Douglas in the hope he can rediscover his world cup form.

Against the French I’d revert to a 5-3 bench, adding Godwin in place of Skelton, who stupidly denied himself the opportunity to prove his worth (if any).
