Not really: he’s leaving the slow and mediocre behind, and returning to the high impact, high-intensity world of the NRL. Don’t see how that is particularly soft.

Did Sam Burgess take the easy way out, or the sensible option?

I think Michael has got it right above- Burgess is a risk-taker who charges headfirst into everything: he saw an adventure and charged at it. He may well have been greedy for new fame and money too, but then that’s ambition for you.

However stupid you may think he’s been, he doesn’t deserve to be chained to the rotting carcass that is English Rugby Union.

Did Sam Burgess take the easy way out, or the sensible option?

Burgess was unwise at best, but he is just a young athlete who listened to bad advice- I can’t blame him *too* much for giving Union a go. He’s made his living from self-belief and aggression, and he just overbid his hand. He will be able to make amends.
English Rugby Union, on the other hand, should have had the brains to handle a gift like Burgess, but instead they handled the matter with the same bed-wetting incompetence they handle everything.

On the plus side, Burgess *is* a good league player, and we all get to watch him play in League again- hopefully he’ll concentrate on the job at hand now.

England rugby cop it after Burgess switches back

Let’s face it, everyone secretly wants Argentina to win the whole world cup, just to shake things up a bit!

Wallabies vs Argentina highlights: Australia secure World Cup Final showdown with the All Blacks

Croquet is oquet by me!

A recently discovered photo shows Billy the Kid was a fan.

Croquet: The thwack heard around the world

Boring clickbait here. Considering the fact that it was, technically, a wrong decision, I haven’t heard that much from the Scots on this. If an All Blacks/ Wallabies match was decided the same way, I doubt the decision would be taken with any greater equanimity.

Are the Brits (and the Irish) sport's biggest whingers?

Honestly, I’m not sure much of the media storm was really about Goodes himself: the ‘anti-political correctness’ crowd, and the equally selfish ‘Look how not racist I am- give me a medal’ crowd both jumped on his case to vent their own frustrations or blazon their supposed moral superiority across the internet. It was like some weird divorce with Goodes as the kid of parents looking to score points against each other. And I’d say both sides were equally culpable in forcing him into keeping a low profile.

Adam Goodes speaks out in first interview

I don’t really agree with Joe, but given Dr. King’s track record with women, his point about ignoring certain skeletons does seem strangely appropriate here.

Greg Hardy's "guns blazing" quip has turned NFL into a farce

This is just sad: I think Meatloaf gave a better account of himself last time he was at the GF……..

To be fair, he’s incredibly accurate as long as you go by the exact opposite of what he says.

Given that the Arizona players leading the Haka are stated as being Polynesian, it seems borderline offensive to tell them what their culture is or isn’t. If the issue is that ‘non-Maori’ are doing it, then it puts the All-Blacks in a laughable position.

American college football team under fire for performing cringeworthy haka

it’s not a serious question, more a passive-aggressive implication that the team are ‘not Japanese’, therefore SA weren’t really beaten by Japan. It’s a pretty ironic line of argument in the context of South African Rugby, but I suppose you have to try and find excuses where you can……………..

Japan beat South Africa in the biggest upset in rugby history

Oh good, a Spiro article about England. Bet this is going to be full of well-balanced objective analysis, and not a foaming mouthed jeremiad based on some sort of raging inferiority complex…..

Seriously, it’s fine to hate England: (everyone does), but this is just getting out of hand.

SPIRO: England begin World Cup with a bonus point whimper

Seeing as how he mainly uses it to shoot himself in the foot, your advice wouldn’t be doing him any favours………..

An open letter to the people who've written open letters to Nick Kyrgios

Maybe KM meant ‘No culture, but lots of drugs’?

No drug culture at the Suns, says Karmichael Hunt

Oh God. That read like something a small child would write but never send.

Dear Lionel Messi,
you are my favrit footballer and i think you are really good and one day i will be really gooder and i will play wif you in the world cup for Australia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lots of love,

Anthony Mundine (kinda) calls out Floyd Mayweather in open letter

Just to play devil’s advocate here- if a kiwi rugby-player ran to the opposing fans after scoring a try and did the ‘throat-cutting’ gesture that was once included in the Haka, then it probably would cause offence. I think if the Swans all did the ‘War Dance’ together before the match to the opposing team, there’d be no complaint whatsoever.

Personally, I’m not offended by Goodes or his dance in the least, but it’s a bit much to use the incident as a shibboleth to split the footy world into ‘racists vs bien pensant good-guys’.

I also think there’s more than a touch of hypocrisy about the article’s stance on the media whipping-up the incident, given that The Roar is only one step away from having its own ‘Adam Goodes’ section.

Adam Goodes is spot on, people need to take a chill pill

Although in fairness, when casual fans watch a good technical match in UFC, they howl that it’s all hugging on the ground, they can’t see what’s happening, and they want more Jean Claude Van Damme karate kicks etc.

Mayweather beats Pacquiao in Las Vegas

Augmented shoulder power counts for little when you’re punching thin air though…

More importantly, an injured shoulder didn’t affect the fact that Team Pacquiao’s tactical plan seemed to be ‘Let Floyd fight on his own terms and completely dictate the pace of the fight’.

Seriously, I wanted Pacquiao to win, but he didn’t even come close, and the excuse making and ‘shoulda-woulda-coulda’ talk is getting out of hand.

Mayweather beats Pacquiao in Las Vegas

a) It was a pretty big sporting event: you’ll be going some to find a bigger one.
b) it was a pretty good fight, technically.
c) Mayweather is older than Pacquiao: it’s not like he has stayed in shape automatically while Manny fights the aging process
d) Manny was tactically outclassed- he fought almost entirely on Mayweather’s terms and had no way of taking him out of his comfort zone: he wouldn’t have fared any better against a younger sharper Mayweather.

Mayweather beats Pacquiao in Las Vegas

Mayweather threw more punches, landed more punches, and received fewer punches. You may not like Mayweather, but the result is not questionable at all.

Mayweather beats Pacquiao in Las Vegas

Good comment Hughster: I’ve just escaped from Yahoo comments, where people are apparently upset because there weren’t enough ‘fireworks’ (ie no-one got choke slammed through a plywood table). I *wanted* Manny to win, but Mayweather put on a masterclass, and there is no doubt now that he is the superior boxer by quite some margin. They could have 10 re-matches and it would come out the same way. To be honest, I think Maidana did a better job of taking Mayweather out of his comfort zone.

On the other hand, Hayne will also be trying his strength against the biggest and best names in his new sport, so that should balance things out in terms of difficulty. If Hayne were to stay and try his hand at American Football in Australia, it would be more akin to Mundine’s boxing career.

Hayne's switch easier than mine: Mundine

I like this author, but the fact that he suggests Rio Ferdinand’s tweet was comparatively ‘clever’, shows he was writing this with a very one-eyed approach.

Off-field indiscretions are slowly killing the NRL
