Historic position doesn’t reflect their current approach/ability.

Under Pat Lam’s leadership they are undeniably the most exciting and entertaining team in the Premiership. Exeter bring a positional, powerhouse game. Saracens were much the same (prior to their salary cap indiscretions).

They’ve had a huge boost of funding for marquee players, combined with astute coaching and a high quality attacking philosophy.

Or Jonny May, his attempt was worse! He went BETWEEN the prop’s legs!!

The Wrap: Unravelling Australian rugby’s unholy war

In many ways I agree, Cheika should have been fired. But, if that triggered a significant payout that RA couldn’t afford at the time (ontop of the one that Larkham had to be paid because Cheika fired him without permission), is it still reasonable to expect her to do so?

I just think she’s damned if she did, damned if she didn’t. Possibly knowing the financial issues RA were in for 2019 (as world cup years are always losses), she chose the more ‘constructive’ path of trying to support and put in place structures that would last beyond his tenure.

Australian rugby has its problems, but Raelene Castle was not one of them

Hi Stillmissit,
So if the key thing is the Wallabies performances, can’t it fairly easily be argued that she did try to address them in an effective manner given the constraints in place?
(Constraints) Cheika was still under contract until the end of the WC, and RA didn’t have the funds to pay out an early termination.
(Attempts to address)
Instead, she supported Cheika by giving him extensive training camps and preparation with the Wallabies in the leadup to the World Cup, and also appointed Scott Johnson to oversee the program. Then, using Johnson, organised a high quality coaching team for the Wallabies (Rennie, Taylor, Wisemantle) to take over after Cheika finished up.
What more could she have done to correct the issues, than provide support and backing to a coach that she couldn’t axe/fire?

Your final sentence undermines any credibiltiy the rest of the response garnered. A simple look at the nature of current protests across the US about civil liberties in the face of the pandemic shows that this is far more complex than simply ‘left’ vs ‘right’.

Australian rugby has its problems, but Raelene Castle was not one of them

On your last point, I was getting super frustrated this season when a tackler would bring down the attacker, let go of the legs, only for the attacker to release the ball and stand up, pick up the ball, and keep going! Something about this just doesn’t seem fair…

Why defence will be the best form of attack for Dave Rennie’s new Wallabies

Nick, do you have any insight or theories as to why this “easy thing” wasn’t addressed in a way that was demonstrated on the field during Cheika’s reign?

It was and is something that’s so clear to Wallabies fans, yet didn’t seem to get addressed publicly.

Thanks Nic, was one of my first foray’s into actually replying rather than lurking/ghosting in the background. Might try this again some time!

Will Australia leave New Zealand out in the cold?

Steve, where are we going to get sponsorship/funding from without the international broadcast markets? With the financial clout of European, and increasingly Japanese, clubs taking our best players, there’s no way that a domestic comp will in any way match the funding we currently receive as a part of SANZAAR.

You don’t have to like the current setup, but what’s a realistic arrangement that manages to keep quality players in Australia, and thus in the Wallabies?

Will Australia leave New Zealand out in the cold?

Hi Gloria,

I tend to see the Roar’s “pro-Castle stance” as less being about Castle, and more about identifying the agenda that is behind Fox Sports’ fairly blatant smear campaign. Why is it that almost all of the negative articles about rugby union are being published by companies owned by News Corp?

Writers like Geoff Parkes and Brett McKay clearly show how the broadcast rights tender process, and Castle’s rejection of Fox Sports’ initial bid in order to take the tender process to an open market, has led to Fox Sports’ campaign. Get rid of Castle, and Fox Sports get a cheaper broadcast deal.

Hi Hope,

Enjoying the recent articles, even if The Roar isn’t a conventional ground for E-Sports news. From being semi-pro in CS 1.6 days, to now rarely squeezing in the odd match, it’s nice to see these popping up!!

Key Overwatch terms explained

Hi Neil,

Fair call re the medium, probably some misunderstanding on both sides. It’s rare to find someone like yourself who actually has their fair share of understanding of the topic, and you’re right, sports forums aren’t really an appropriate place. It’s honestly quite challenging reading the comments and seeing so many people just crap all over faith, with seemingly little regard for those of said faith who are just trying to get by as best they can.

Anyway, all the best!

Why David Pocock is the real role model in Australian rugby

Neil I’d really encourage you to consider a couple of things. Firstly, to claim that only those “inculcated from birth” follow the claims and beliefs of Christianity is incorrect (I’m proof of that, as are many of my friends), and quite frankly offensive.

A considered decision based on reason and experience is not “inculcation”. Just because you disagree with it doesn’t immediately make it worthy of derision.

Secondly, I’d spend some more time reading into the actual teachings of Jesus. You obviously don’t have to if you don’t want to, but please consider that you may not have a full understanding of the teachings and that influences your viewpoint. While you may not agree with it, there is complexity and ambiguity, in the issues this whole saga brings up. It isn’t black and white like many are posing.

Great to have you back Scott!!

One step forward, a couple back for the Wallabies

Best expressed opinion from you yet!!

Frustrated, sure, but Reds' revival in good shape

It’s behind a paywall. Anyone care to summarise the article?
