Sorry, a correction is required; it wasn’t FAO, it was the World Bank.

Three little-known cricketers who were more than the game

Plz forgive me if my posts here are becoming too large. I love talking about our liberation history and I love talking about our cricket history; and if they get combined it’s very difficult to control myself.
It’s about Jewel’s death. After Bangladesh declared it’s independence on 26th march, initially it was a guerrilla type war; and most of the activities of the Muktijodhas was in the remote parts of the country. Dacca was full of military personnel. I think it was in June or July that the Muktijodhas had their first major operation in Dacca, a power station was blown up in central Dacca.
Meanwhile the Pak govt had asked for a huge aid package from FAO. But the organization was ready to give the package only after becoming sure that everything had become normal in East Pakistan. So, they send a team to Dacca who stayed in the Intercontinental Hotel.
The freedom fighters, on the other hand was determined to stop the package, as they feared that most of the money would be diverted to military use.
So three young men were sent near to the hotel, Jewel, a student leader named Maya (he is still actively involved in politics and is an influential member of the ruling party), and a hockey player
whose name I can’t recall now.
The plan was to give a message to FAO without hurting anyone. So, as a car of FAO Dacca office waited in the hotel, a grenade hit it and it was badly damaged. But no one was hurt. The Report reached the FAO headquarters and the package was cancelled.
So the mission was successful, but soon all 3 were captured and taken to the Dacca cantonment. On 1st Sept many people (including Jewel’s 2 comrades) were released as part of an ‘amnesty’ offered by Gen. Yahya Khan, the military dictator of Pak at the time. But, Jewel never returned.
It’s possible that he was already dead due to the tortures.
Both Jewel and Maya were awarded the ‘Bir Bikrom’, the 3rd highest gallantry award of Bangladesh. I presume the 3rd member of the group also got the same award.

Raqibul Hasan, Jewel’s opening partner and roommate during away matches perhaps deserve a mention as well. In 1969-70 season he was the 12th man for Pak in the Dacca test against NZ; that’s the closest any Bengali got to playing a test for Pak.
On 27th Feb 1971, a 4 day unofficial test between Pak and a Commonwealth team (led by Micky Stewart) started at Dacca and Raqibul was in the Pak team. The match was suspended on the 3rd day as the political situation in Dacca became very volatile.
Raqibul went to bat with a sticker attached to his bat that read ‘Joi Bangla’ (Victory to Bangla)
The close in fielders asked him about it and he explained everything. So far, everything was in good sprit.
But the Pak military soon learned about it and as Bangladesh declared independence om 26th March, Raqibul’s name was among the top of the target list. So, he had to flee to Calcutta to save his life. He returned after 16th Dec. to learn that half a dozen of his family members were killed. He also learned about the death of Jewel and was devastated.
Nevertheless, Raqibul played a major part building cricket in Bangladesh. Intl. cricket returned with the match between North Zone and MCC at Rajshahi, starting on 31st Dec. 1976. And quite appropriately Raqibul led the north Zone side.
Raqibul played in the first 2 ODIs of Bangladesh in 1986. Ironically, his debut was against Pak.

Charles Aubrey Smith
Captained England to victory in his only test (most prob against SA).
Then went on to a successful acting career, first in London and then in Hollywood.

Three little-known cricketers who were more than the game

Naimur Rahman Durjoy, Bangladesh’s 1st test captain, has been representing the Manikganj (near Dhaka) 1 constituency from 2014. I must add that his family has a long history of politics.

Three little-known cricketers who were more than the game

Haleem Chowdhury (better known as Shahid Jewel).
Opening batsman for East Pakistan during the 1960s. Actively participated and died during the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971.
If alive, certainly would have played and probably captained the Bangladesh national team.
There is a ‘Shahid Jewel’ stand in the Mirpur stadium.

Actually my main job is as an A Level Math teacher in an Eng Medium school in Uttara in North Dhaka. (Uttar Means North). Already their exam has started, so I don’t have much to do there. And the school will remain closed in June.
On Sat, I go to Gazipur, some 30km north of Dhaka, and take math class for Computer Science students in a college; this college is under National University, Bangladesh. There, I do some administrative work as well. There, lots of exams are going on, as we are trying to make up for the time lost due to covid.

This article eased my work a lot. It specially helped me in finding the top order batters.

The combined Test team of number 11s

1000 runs and 100 wickets. Obviously he achieved it very late in his career.

The combined Test team of number 11s

Ja. Agar, Lindwall, Armstrong -plenty of options from Aus; went for Vic.

Just heard the news in TV; I am shocked.

Was it junior Murray or David Murray? Junior played in the 1990s.

The masters of the under-16 ODIverse: The best international team to face the mighty West Aussies from World Cup-winning teams

Off topic.
19th April was a bad day for Bangladesh cricket as two former ODI cricketers died.
Right arm medium pacer Samiur Rahman Sami played in Bangladesh’s first two ODIs in the 1986 Asia Cup in SL, but he failed to take any wickets.
He died, aged 68.
Left arm spinner Mosharraf Rubel was only 40. He was suffering from cancer for the last 4 years.

The end of all things: Some oddities and coincidences concerning the ending of Test matches

Great article, great research work

The end of all things: Some oddities and coincidences concerning the ending of Test matches

I know I am a bit late coming here. But 3 memories of him will always remain intact for me; all came during the 1995-96 season.
first at Hobert, when he smashed 3 sixes late on the first day. We didn’t know at the time that his toe was broken by a Waqar Younus Yorker .And he didn’t bowl in this match, but the Aussie’s still managed to win. Both the Waughs as well as Blewitt had to role their arms.
Then at SCG, when he bowled Basit Ali round his legs with the final ball of the 3rd days play.
The final one came in the ODI event, when he mimicked Curtly Ambrose’s celebration after dismissing the quickie (most prob LBW). I think Ian Chappell made a comment about a possible retribution with Curtly with the ball.

'Utterly heartbreaking'; 'Can't quite believe it': Tributes flow for Shane Warne, 'the man who made spin cool'

during the afternoon session of the 4th day. I was discussing the match with my colleagues in the teacher’s lounge. We were expecting a draw. Then I went to the library and was surprised to see the Kiwis five wickets down .
as the 4th day ended, I still felt a bit apprehensive. I was expecting Taylor to dig in and start a fightback. a target of 100+ would be tricky against this pace attack, I said to myself.
Final day started at 4 am here in Dhaka. I woke up around 6:20 and was looking to get the lunch score. Was surprised to find out that it was all over.

Bangladesh Tigers pounce to beat New Zealand: How the world reacted to monumental upset

great article. enjoyed it.

The real reason why the majority don’t want fast bowling captains

Can you write a similar article on the whole Bangladesh team before their next test.

I’ve never been a huge Travis Head fan, but I look forward to him proving me wrong

I want Bangladesh teams to play in 1st class tournament throughout the world, specially in parts outside the subcontinent. Not the national team, but A team ,B team, or Khulna Division (the dominant force in domestic cricket) .
But it will be very interesting if cricket Aus do invite a Bangladesh team to play Sheffield shield for a season or two. There is a huge community in Bangladesh who stays in the so called ‘social media’ for 25 hours per day and they make an issue out of nothing.
I can see comments like;’ is Aus showing contempt to us’ or ‘what a way to insult our cricket’. these guys think they know everything.

Why inviting Bangladesh to the Sheffield Shield would improve international cricket

and early 1980 I believe

'WHAT'S JUST HAPPENED?' Cricket world in disbelief as NZ spinner stuns India with TEN-wicket haul

Got Patel (NZ), Ashwin and Agarwal in my fantasy team. Kohli with his duck is the only blot so far.

'WHAT'S JUST HAPPENED?' Cricket world in disbelief as NZ spinner stuns India with TEN-wicket haul

Following the Mumbai test with keen interest. For me, these traditional venues, like Bombay, Calcutta, Karachi always carry extra values.
Must say, things can very quickly become confusing, if both the teams Have A. Patel in their squads, and both are left arm spinners.
