“Men do not quit playing because they grow old; they grow old because they quit playing.”

India are a class team. But their fielding is weak, and their over reliance on Kohli is starting to show.

Rohit is struggling, Dhawan looks rusty. Dhoni is not what he used to be.

Their bench is strong though, with Rahul, Pant and Chahal.

But I don’t see them as massive favorites.

Finch stars as Australia beat India

Not just yesterday Paul, we have been taking games deep against India, just struggled to close games, which can happen to inexperienced teams.

Yesterday was a massive result for us, we can only get better from here.

Finch stars as Australia beat India

Don, Stoinis struggling to rotate issue, IMO, has been happening for a while, not just in this game.

He can hit the big ball, and has talent, but needs to rotate better early in his innings or else the pressure he creates on his partners will result in his axing. I do want to see him succeed, hope he rises to challenge.

Aussies suffer last-over loss in ODI thriller against India

This’s a tough wicket against best team in the world. Strike rates are relative, and I thought given the opposition we did alright.

Stoinis needs to learn to rotate, which should not be mighty difficult given the level he plays at. His lack of rotation, dead defense, puts immense pressure on his partners.

Khawaja, looked the best batsman from either side, yet failed to convert. Should have done a Kohli and won the game for Australia.

David, Maxi scored back to wall Test 100 in India, would you care to elaborate how is that not “taking his chance” and on what grounds was he dropped after that solid innings?

How can a bloke survive/flourish when his confidence is constantly bashed?

After summer of Khawaja, what did we do? We dropped him after 2 poor Tests in Sri Lanka.

Maxi comes in the third Test, scores a solid 100, and instead of nourishing his talent, what did we do?

You see the pattern!

How Maxwell and Stoinis can do Australian cricket - and themselves - a big favour

Sorry for late response mate.
I reckon Lynn can be a good finisher. We have too many options at the top. We just need to back Lynn.

Change is inevitable, but growth is optional

I was fortunate to be around to see the ‘Best sustained fast bowling’ in the series when Johnson destroyed not just a solid England team but brought and end to English era. Perfection does not exist, but that performance is as close as you can get.

Hazlewood and Strac have been off for a while, and they need to be challenged. I trust that will happen. I agree, our system has flaws and hopefully we get right people in place to sort that out.

Patterson ton versus Sri Lanka upstages Test rivals

Smith struggled in ODIs before suspension, and his captaincy has always been weak.
I would be happy for him to just concentrate on Red ball cricket.

Marsh should never play Test cricket again, or else there will be riots in Australia.

Change is inevitable, but growth is optional

Harsh for Carey, but Handscomb is better batsman and keeps well.

Change is inevitable, but growth is optional

Yep, Marsh is a good short form player, but leader he is not.
His Tests days are over.

Change is inevitable, but growth is optional

The treatment of Maxi is borderline criminal. Denying him a opportunity consistently for past 3 years which he has rightfully earned by his performances. Our Cricket team is a mess, and not all of it due to Sandpaper issue.

We struggled against Lankans, during the series when Khawaja and Burns were burned after 2 bad Tests.
Warner becomes captain for T20s, pushes Maxi to open, cause Warner is secure and Maxi does not threaten him, and Maxi wins the series single handedly, one innings being a majestic 140. Everyone else struggled. The gulf between Maxi and other batsman in our team was so wide for any novice to see how specially skilled Maxi is. And how do we treat that, instead of nourish the talent, we systematically try to destroy him.
Andrew Symonds, repeated.

Patterson ton versus Sri Lanka upstages Test rivals

He is fun around the team, and trains smarter than Maxi. So what Maxi scored a pressure cooker hundred in India, you need to be FUN!

Don, Patterson has struggled to make hundreds everyone understands that. He really has not delivered on the promise of that debut innings of 156 where he outclassed Simon Katich. But, this is the best we have. Patterson and Maxi, both of them have superior numbers than Head/Finch/Labuschagne.

There is also the case, once you get blokes in Australian Team/System, the intensity lifts, training lifts, and their game gets better if they have what it takes. Given what we have available we need to get them in, for Maxi that was 3 years back.

By picking Head/Labuchagne/Finch ahead of Patterson, yes, his superior Shield returns are being ignored.

Patterson’s backfoot drive has lot of Smith in it. His lack of feet-movement when playing those booming drives is a concern, but then Sehwag/KP/Hayden did not have great feet movement either.

Selectors ignoring Patterson/Maxi is beyond baffling. Media needs to get on top of this and ask those hard questions persistently.

Good points Wasim.
If Lynn is pushed up and we end with top 3 of Lynn/Khawaja/Warner, that’s a solid top 3. Lynn needs to be backed and told to stop looking over his shoulder, same with Khawaja, give them the backing and take pressure of them.
Who would you drop for Zampa? Agar must play, he keeps them tight, brilliant in the field, and with the bat.

Change is inevitable, but growth is optional

True mate, it’s not Finch’s fault they asked him to open in Tests when in Shield for Victoria he batted in middle order and did well, baffling!

Change is inevitable, but growth is optional

Hang on, the KPI is scoring 30s, so the selectors are doing exactly that.

Australia's batting future on show in Hobart today

Rob, it’s not so much that Finch is struggling, it’s the way he has been getting out.
Plonking his left foot on off stump, and anything that is straight or, god forbid, anything that swings-in, he gets his legs into scissors, head falling over loses his balance and gone.
Ponting and Inzy had similar issues but knew how to sort it.

This problem for Finch has persisted for a while now, and I really think he needs time away to sort it out.

Stoinis has done well for Melbourne Stars, but we have better players at top available.

Warmer and Khawaja can smash teams, and Marsh can play that anchor role.

Marsh/Handscomb/Maxi in the middle are good runners.

Lynn with his hitting, can win a game on his own. We need Lynn and Maxi on slow grounds in England.

Agar and Starc give us a solid tail. With that in mind, Stoinis and Lynn coming late can be really aggressive.

This side, I believe, will be hard to beat. Just need to back them.

Change is inevitable, but growth is optional

Thanks Paul.
Sorry for the confusion, what I meant was Warner could have been great Captain, but his self inflicted Sandpaper issue has prevented that unfortunately.
Marsh can’t be captain, too quite, was looked over for WA Captaincy for that reason.
I would still have Lynn over Carey for reasons mentioned above.
Thanks for challenging my thought process mate.

Change is inevitable, but growth is optional

Paul, dropping Carey will be harsh, but those are the decisions that need to be made. Australia has plenty of good options at the top, I don’t see how he can bat better than Warner/Khawaja/Lynn.

The way I look at it, it’s Carey or Handscomb, and latter is better batsman.

Last game Handscomb played for Melbourne Stars, he scored 70 and kept wickets, he is good enough keeper in short form.

Change is inevitable, but growth is optional

Matt, Cummins is a solid No. 9 in ODIs. He has played some good knocks for Sydney Thunder.

Change is inevitable, but growth is optional

I just don’t see how Finch can consistently be successful against quality fast bowling, especially after his confidence has taken a bashing.

Stanlake, great future prospect, needs to improve on his accuracy.
Stoinis, does not have the shots or flexibility of Khawaja/Marsh/Handscomb. Massive hitter, keep him after 35th over.

Smith – Let him get ready for Ashes.

Change is inevitable, but growth is optional

And we robbed Australian Cricket of such brilliance. Sigh!

Dave Warner remarkably switches to right handed and still punishes Chris Gayle
