Australia will need to come from a long way behind to turn things around against India on day three of the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3pm (AEDT).
Australia showed plenty of fight on the second day, but fatigue started to hit the bowling attack late on.
The Aussies have been out on the field for over 110 overs, unsure of when the onslaught from all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel will come to an end. With the first-innings lead already at 144, the visitorswill be hoping to get the last three wickets within the first hour of play and show some application in the second innings with the bat.
Todd Murphy has impressed with a five-wicket haul in his very first Test innings, and he will aim to best Jason Krejza’s famous eight-wicket haul at this venue in 2008 for best figures by an Australian off-spinner on debut.
While India have not been flawless with the bat, they have shown that this Nagpur pitch is not a rank turner and you can score runs if you apply yourself after a hard grind. Rohit Sharma led from the front as skipper and the Indian captain will hope Jadeja and Patel can extend the current 144-run lead 200 or more to stamp their authority early in the series.
While this Test may be done and dusted by now, the series is not. Australia have to put in the hard yards with the bat to ensure that the Indians are wary of their opponents come the Tests in Delhi, Dharamsala and Ahmedabad.
If not, this could easily become a repeat of the 2013 Border-Gavaskar Trophy debacle, which the tourists lost 4-0.
