Pakistan and Australia take to the field for Day 2 of the first Test in Dubai. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5pm (AEST).

The hosts undoubtedly had the better of Day 1, yet the Australians gritted their teeth late in the day to set up an intriguing second morning.

With a new cherry, Australia will look to continue its late Day 1 rally, where three wickets fell after tea and Pakistan put a solid start in jeopardy.

Nathan Lyon, Peter Siddle and Jon Holland all struck late, with the wickets of openers Imam-ul-Haq and veteran Mohammad Hafeez vital, after the openers had posted a double hundred stand for the first wicket.

As the heat of the day stretched well into the afternoon, the Australian bowlers could easily have wilted, yet they stayed on task and found a way to dislodge the top order.

Mitchell Starc looked particularly sore and sorry by days end and there appears little relief ahead on what is a flat and lifeless pitch, which could become a nightmare on which to bat late in the match.

The first session will be key today. If the Australians can manage early wickets, the monstrous Pakistan total that appeared likely around lunchtime yesterday will look well off.

On the other hand, if the middle order settles well and starts to score freely, the Australians could still be chasing leather come the afternoon session.
