Zimbabwe meet the Netherlands at Adelaide Oval, in what will likely be both teams’ second to last match of the T20 World Cup. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3pm (AEDT).
After a stunning win over Pakistan earlier in the tournament, a no-result against South Africa and a heartbreaking three-run loss to Bangladesh, Zimbabwe held hopes of a spot in the semi-finals, yet even a resounding win against the Dutch today may not be enough to sneak them through, bar something extraordinary.
The two points for a win would send Zimbabwe temporarily to second place in the group, with Pakistan needing to slaughter South Africa by the length of the straight and Zimbabwe to topple India before joining the winner of Bangladesh and India in the final four.
The Netherlands have no points to cheer about after a disappointing tournament and nothing to play for but pride. It has been a tough group for them with three straight losses, despite playing some good cricket across the tournament and going close against Bangladesh in their opening match of the Super 12s.
Both India and Pakistan have beaten up on the Dutch and strong performances to end the event would do much for their confidence moving forward.
Colin Ackerman has impressed for Netherlands throughout the tournament and Paul van Meekeren has shown himself to be a fine cricketer with both bat and ball. However, up against the quality in the Zimbabwe side, the victory will be hard fought if won.
Sikander Raza looks a quality cricketer in both disciplines, whilst Sean Williams, Brad Evans and Craig Irvine form the basis of a respectable batting line-up. Evans has also been impressive with the ball at times and could be crucial in clamping down on the Dutch middle order.
Prediction
Whilst it would take a miracle for Zimbabwe to qualify for the finals, a third-place finish in the group would be something to boast about and I expect them to play with real purpose against a team they simply should beat in a canter.
