At the Malaysia Open finals, Elina Svitolina was able to overcome Eugenie Bouchard and claim her first title of 2016.

The Ukrainian dropped the first set, but remains undefeated against the Canadian, with a 3-0 record.

Fighting through the humidity, rain, questionable line calls, umpire overrules, and a lack of the Hawkeye system, Svitolina defeated Miyu Kato, Riza Ozaki, Kristina Kucova and Zhu Lin en route to the final.

The match between Svitolina and Bouchard lasted two hours and 53 minutes, but due to rain interruption it took six hours to play.

Svitolina eventually downed the Canadian 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, earning her first title of the year and capturing the fourth WTA title of her career at the age of just 21.

Bouchard rose as high as world number 5 in 2014, with a pair of semi-final showings and even a final appearance in that breakout year. However, she dropped to 52, late last year at the 2015 US Open, reaching the fourth round before suffering a concussion which ended her campaign.

Steadily on the rise again, Bouchard’s final appearance in the Malaysian Open saw her jump ten spots to number 42.

With Indian Wells coming up, an in-form Svitolina is ready to showcase her skills against the top players, many of whom have been less than successful this season.
