Such was the excitement in Saturday’s Preakness Stakes in Baltimore that several people in the crowd were taken to hospital with real or suspected cardiac issues.

For those who may not know, the Preakness is the second leg in the Triple Crown series, the first being the Kentucky Derby, which took place on May five.

The third in the series, The Belmont Stakes, is coming up in three weeks time in New York.

While many are awaiting the Stakes, the Derby was exciting enough. A horse named Bodemeister led all the way until it was run down in the stretch by I’ll Have Another, ridden by a young Mexican jockey, Mario Gutierrez.

Bob Baffert, Bodemeister’s trainer, stated that he was going to have his horse lead all the way again in the Preakness, which is slightly longer than the Derby at a mile and three sixteenths. His plan was thwarted however, when I’ll Have Another stormed home to win by a neck.

To watch it, take several deep breaths and make sure you are sitting down.

It was so tense, that the race caller almost has a heart attack himself.

There’ll be huge interest in the Belmont, which takes place over a longer distance yet again.

It takes a really great horse to win the Triple Crown. Can I’ll Have Another do it?

Affirmed was the last horse to do it, way back in 1978.

And there’s big money to be won on these races. One mother dreamed the numbers 8,16,2,7 and had her son bet them in the 2009 Kentucky Derby Superfecta.

He put down one dollar and won $547,000.
