The glitzy and glamourous side of Formula One is on full display as always on the streets of Monaco, as the world championship gears up for Round 8 of the bumper 24-round season at the famous Principality. Tune in on The Roar from 11pm (AEST) for live blog coverage of the Monaco Grand Prix.

Celebrating the 70th world championship Grand Prix this year, Monaco has been an F1 mainstay – though in the modern era has been quite the divisive circuit, given the lack of wheel-to-wheel racing.

To the naysayers, the spectacle of Monaco is the challenge of the short but demanding 3.3km circuit. There is something special about watching the drivers achieve enter a metronomic state as they negotiate the streets for 78 laps without error.

It is at its height during qualifying, where given the lack of overtaking in the race – the impetus is on achieving perfection to set yourself up for the grand prix ahead.

None have been more special than the legendary three-time world champion Ayrton Senna, whom McLaren pay tribute to this weekend with a gorgeous livery adorning the Brazilian’s iconic helmet colours. Senna a six-time winner of the Monaco Grand Prix, while McLaren are the most winningest team with 15.

Reigning world champions Red Bull have had the reign of the Principality, with three consecutive victories. Ferrari – of whom Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc is favourite – have to look back to 2017 for their last Monaco win.

McLaren, buoyed by their Miami win with Lando Norris and speed demonstrated in practice are very much in the hunt too. Their last win in Monaco though, goes back to 2008 when seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton won his first.

In terms of strategy, Monaco is minimal on tyre wear and traditionally pit-stops are minimised to avoid risking that all-so-important track position. Though teams have be versatile, given the impending risk of Safety Cars.

Leclerc earnt a third pole position on home soil, but can it be third time lucky for the Ferrari driver on this occasion? The 26-year old also has snapped Max Verstappen’s pole record for the 2024 season, as the reigning world champion will start down in sixth.

Adopted Monacan for the weekend in Oscar Piastri joins his adopter Leclerc on the front-row, setting up what could be a blockbuster Ferrari vs McLaren stoush for the race if things aren’t straightforward. The second row is comprised of their teammates Carlos Sainz and Norris.
