Yesterday the Aussies equalled their best ever gold medal tally at the Tokyo Olympics, and today they have a couple of massive chances to beat it, starting off with the women’s beach volleyball!

Meanwhile, there are already some pleasing results for the Australians today as Rhydian Cowley finished eighth in the men’s 50km race walk final.

Hannah Green and Minjee Lee are also underway in the women’s golf third round, both chasing USA’s Nelly Korda who carded an astonishing nine-under-par 62 yesterday after she threatened to produce a historical round of 59 but double-bogeyed the last.

Australia are also keen to back up their production in the canoe sprints, with representatives in both the women’s and men’s K4 500m event.

All eyes will be on the women’s beach volleyball however, as Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar are Australia’s best chance of reaching a record 18-gold medal haul, one better than Athens 2004.

“I just feel like the Aussies have built their game to this very moment,” Kerri Pottharst told Channel Seven before the big match.

It would also be Australia’s first visit to the podium in the sport in 17 years.

Later on, Harry Garside takes on Cuba’s Andy Cruz in the men’s lightweight boxing semi-final. Should the Aussie progress he will already know his opponent in the gold medal bout but is guaranteed a medal either way.

In a 33-year stay for Australian boxing, Garside would be assured a medal despite the result as both losing semi-finalists are awarded bronze rather than having to fight it off.

Moving to the track and field, Australia have three representatives in the women’s 20km race walk final vying to add to our sole athletics medal in the Games: a men’s decathlon bronze courtesy of Ash Moloney. Jemima Montag, Rebecca Henderson and Katie Hayward will contest in an event that has been kind to Australia in the past – producing our only athletics medals in Rio.

Then, Linden Hall and Jessica Hull hold Australia’s hopes in the women’s 1500m final after they finished top-four in the semis. Previously, Australia hadn’t had a woman representing in the 1500m decider since 1996, now they have two.

That’s not the only massive final in the track and field either. The women’s javelin throw final kicks off the evening’s huge lineup as Kelsey-Lee Barber, Kathryn Mitchell and Mackenzie Little throw for gold, to be followed by the men’s 5000m final and women’s 400m final.

Afterwards, it’s the speedsters turn as the women’s 4x100m relay final and men’s 4x100m final finishes off the night in style.

Australia’s Marina Carrier also continues in the women’s modern pentathlon, culminating in the laser run final this evening.

Elsewhere, Australia’s only representative in the karate, Tsuneari Yahiro, fights four times tonight, with the first men’s 75kg kumite bout beginning at 6:10pm AEST.

Other notable gold-medal events throughout the day include finals in the men’s boxing heavyweight bout, men’s track cycling sprint decider and men’s table tennis.

There will also be a slew of gold medals awarded in the wrestling.

While both were heartbreaking events for the Aussies in the Games, the women’s hockey and women’s football final also headline a hectic day of Olympics action.
